From Ashes was the first of 4 single-player DLC's for Mass Effect 3 and was released on the same day as the game itself. It involves going back to Eden Prime, the site of the first mission of the original Mass Effect where Commander Shepard first learned about the Reapers, to recover a Prothean artifact that is in the hands of an invading Cerberus force.

[top]Tips & Strategies

DO THIS MISSION AS SOON AS YOU RECEIVE IT! There are two main reasons for this. First, you get a new squadmate after completing this mission, which is always a good thing. Second, and just as important, completing this mission once you get it (if you have it installed before playing the game, it will be right after your first visit to the Citadel) ensures that no other missions will be "locked out" by going after this mission first.

Liara is a mandatory squadmate for this mission, but that's a good thing. Her biotic powers, especially Singularity, can help tremendously against some of the tougher enemies in this mission, rendering them helpess for easy shots. If you are doing this mission immediately after getting it, you will have James as your other squadmate, meaning you will have a high-damage tank and a great biotic backing you up, which is a potent combination.

There are a lot of enemies for such a small mission, so use cover, even on lower difficulties, so that you are not overwhelmed.
This will likely be your first time going up against certain types of Cerberus troopers, namely Combat Engineers, the Nemesis and the Atlas Mech. You'll also face some Guardians as well. Some things to keep in mind:
1. Always take cover when the Nemesis's sniper rifle laser sight is up, as these weapons pack a powerful punch on any difficulty.
2. Try to take down Engineers BEFORE they can spawn their Turrets. If they are left unchecked, their Turrets can take you down quick. Use any powers you have available (ex. Concussive Shot, Liara's Singularity, James's Carnage) to defeat them before their Turrets can go online. Keep in mind that there will be times when you will deal with Turrets already online. Your best move is to TAKE COVER and take them out first.
3. There is a point later in the mission where you will face Guardians, Engineers and Turrets all at once. Take cover and use your powers wisely (Singularity is your best move, especially with an upgrade to its radius) and you'll make it through without a problem.
4. This is likely your easiest chance to hijack an Atlas Mech (and earn the Hijacker trophy), since the Atlas Mech is supported only by regular Assault Troopers. Whether you hijack it or not, remember to stay in cover and heed Liara's advice of not letting it get too close.

Speaking of trophies from the "core game", this is a good mission to work towards Mail Slot and even Combined Arms, so long as it is not done at the expense of completing the mission.

[top]Roadmap

This DLC is more or less straightforward, but here is the plan to keep in mind:
1. Collect the first piece of intel, then examine the stasis pod.
2. Fight Cerberus troopers and collect the other two pieces of intel, earning you Freedom Fighter.
3. Collect the "pod info" and fight more enemies.
4. Get back to the pod and transmit the activation sequence, then hold your position through two waves of enemies (including the Atlas Mech).
5. Talk to your new squadmate, earning you Prothean Expert and finishing the DLC.

THIS TROPHY IS MISSABLE!

The intel that you are looking for is stored on three separate computer terminals in various buildings throughout the mission that you will have to examine to pick up. The reason this trophy is missable is because you will have to backtrack to the stasis pod late in the mission, upon which time it will be impossible to get to intel terminals #2 and #3. The best strategy is to get them at your earliest opportunity to save time and aggravation. Of course, take care of any enemies first.

1. After descending the hill at the start of the mission, head to the building on the right BEFORE going to the stasis pod. Go straight to the last room but do not exit just yet. Go to the back wall and it will be on a computer terminal on a table to your left.

2. After the first wave of Cerberus troopers (including Centurions and Nemesis snipers), enter the first building on the left and turn right at the wall. The computer terminal with the intel is to your left on a table just before you exit the building.

3. Exit the building with packet #2 (the exit where you drop down) and enter the building in front of you. You will face another wave of Cerberus troopers, this time with Engineers and Guardians, so utilize the strategies mentioned earlier. After dealing with the threat outside, go back into the building and turn left (or right if you stayed indoors during the wave of enemies). You will see a giant computer terminal on your left. Examine it to earn your trophy and up your War Asset score by 100.

STORY-RELATED; CANNOT BE MISSED.

This trophy is earned by completing the "From Ashes" DLC and recruiting your new squadmate. It will unlock between the conversation with him on Eden Prime when he awakens from stasis and when he arrives on the Normandy, where you can learn more about the Protheans from the "Last of the Protheans", who seems amused by the fact that the "primitives" of his time now rule the galaxy.
