Calendar Recovery Trick
If you alter the current date of the PS3, you can recover 25% of Snake's HP for each day.

Drebin Discounts
  • 20% discount during Wednesday and Sunday
  • 50% discount during Act 5

Note: The discounts don't stack

Unlock Little Gray Emblem Early
You can unlock this emblem as early as your second or third playthrough. When going for the Chicken Emblem, you will probably be able to collect 65 out of 69 weapons. The remaining 4 weapons are Patriot, Desert Eagle (L.B.), Thor and Type 17 and you can unlock this weapons quickly by just entering certain passwords. The passwords are listed below on the Cheats, Glitches, & Exploits section

Drebin Point Farming
In Act 5, you will come across a room full of scarabs. These little critters will spawn infinitely unless you go to the next area. Each scarab will cost 100 DP. If you are running out of ammo, buy from Drebin but make sure you can get it back. If you have the Bandana item then the better.

Alert Phase Farming
Find a lone soldier and make sure there are no soldier around him. When you find one, run in front of him to get an Alert Phase then CQC throw him down to remove the Alert Phase immediately. After that, wake him up then repeat the process.

Kill Count Farming
  • In Act 1 before heading inside Advent Palace. The enemies on this area just before Advent Palace spawns infinitely so you can farm your kills here.
  • In Act 2 at the Power Station and Vista Mansion. Enemies here will spawn infinitely.

Continue Count Farming
There are emblems which requires you to have over 25 continues and the best locations to farm this are located on the following:
  • In Act 3 during the battle with Raging Raven. At the start of the battle, there will be windows behind Snake, just jump through these windows and let Snake fall to his death
  • In Act 4, in the room before the elevator going to Rex' hangar. At the start of the room, there should a traphole, just let Snake fall on these traphole and continue.
  • In Act 5 during the battle with Screaming Mantis. Find Meryl or Akiba then shoot them down with lethal weapons.

Recovery Item Usage Farming
If you don't have enough recovery items. Use everything you have in your inventory then after using all, let Snake die then continue to get everything back and repeat.

Ration Farming
There is an easy way on farming tons of Rations that you need for certain emblems. You will only be able to do this though if you have the Bandana item. In Act 2 when you reach the Power Station, there is a large area where the rebels are going through in order to reach the station. Equip the Bandana and Tanegashima and keep shooting until you create the Divine Wind. It has a 90% chance of appearing here on this large field. When you cause the Divine Wind, every soldier/rebel that it passes through will cause them to drop tons of different items including Rations. You will get 50+ rations in no time.

[top]Roadmap

First and foremost, you cannot use old save files to earn trophies. You need to start fresh in order to earn trophies meaning you need to start a new game and use a new save file.

Since there are no difficulty trophies, you can play in any difficulty for the seven playthroughs. For the final playthrough, you will be playing on The Boss Extreme.

Why do you need to get all 40 emblems even if there's no emblem related trophy? You need to get all emblems because there is a song for the ipod that you will unlock after getting the Big Boss Emblem and another song that will be unlocked after getting all 40 emblems.

Roadmap 1

This roadmap is more like for new comers or for casual players. The Big Boss Emblem is save for last but make sure to get the Little Gray Emblem early to save you from having a 9th speed run playthrough. You can use the passwords provided above to unlock the guns that are only rewarded after completing hard emblems like the Big Boss Emblem.

First Playthrough
For the first playthrough, just enjoy and play the game. Practice your stealth skills in this playthrough. Aim for the Centipede Emblem on this run. The requirements for this emblem is stated at the bottom of the guide but one of the requirements is to have over 25 continues, if you want the corpse camo to be available on your next playthrough for you to earn the I Just Don't Fear Death trophy then you need at least 51 continues. Skip the cutscenes if you want to but if you are aiming for trophies then watch the specific cutscenes stated at Flashback mania.

Story related trophies:
Liquid Sun
Solid Sun
Third Sun
Twin Suns
Old Sun

Possible trophies that you can earn:
You Enjoy the Killing, that's Why

Crop Circle
Are you an Otaku Too?
You're Pretty Good
That Tune is his Mind Control Music
Overhead View, Just like Old Times
LIQUID!

Emblems that you can earn:
  • Centipede Emblem

Second Playthrough
Now that you have completed the game, use the passwords listed above which unlocks Patriot, Desert Eagle (L.B.), Thor and Type 17 so that you will unlock the Little Gray Emblem very early.

Second playthrough is the most boring part of your run since you will be grinding for specific emblems here. In this playthrough, aim for the Chicken Emblem. One of the requirements of the Chicken Emblem is for you to play the game for over 35 hours. Take advantage of this 35 hour requirement by doing 20 other emblems that you can get by hugging the wall for an hour, hide in a box for an hour, roll 200 times and the like. Refer to the emblem list stated at the bottom of the guide for more information.

If you haven't earned Flashback mania on your previous playthrough because you missed some scenes then you can get it here as the previous ones you viewed are carried over. You can watch the cutscenes or just leave the controller while the cutscenes are playing then come back later when the scene is finish to add the minutes spent on these scenes to the game time. Take note though that in certain cutscenes, you need to be present in front of your PS3 because you will be pressing the or button to view a flashback.

If you have used at least 51 continues in your previous playthrough then the Corpse Camo is now in your inventory and you can use this to earn I Just Don't Fear Death trophy

Possible trophies that you can earn:
Divine Wind
I Just Don't Fear Death
I am THE Expert on Weapons, Equipment and Cutting Edge Technology
Can you Feel my Power Now!!!?

Emblems that you can earn:
  • Bear Emblem
  • Eagle Emblem
  • Blue Bird Emblem
  • Hawk Emblem
  • Ant Emblem
  • Gibbon Emblem
  • Tortoise Emblem
  • Rabbit Emblem
  • Lobster Emblem
  • Inch Worm Emblem
  • Hyena Emblem
  • Hog Emblem
  • Gecko Emblem
  • Scarab Emblem
  • Frog Emblem
  • Bee Emblem
  • Pig Emblem
  • Cow Emblem
  • Crocodile Emblem
  • Giant Panda Emblem
  • Puma Emblem
  • Chicken Emblem
  • Little Gray Emblem

Third Playthrough
Now that the most boring part of this platinum trophy run is out of the way. You will be going back to being a ghost while killing a lot of enemies. Over 250 kills to be exact but make sure not to be detected or cause an ALERT for over 25 times.

Emblems that you can earn:
  • Assassin Emblem
  • Tarantula Emblem

Fourth to Seventh Playthrough
From the emblems stated below, it is up to you to decide on what emblem you will take on first. You need to do each emblem on different playthroughs because these emblems have different combinations of conditions.

Emblems that you can earn:
  • Spider Emblem
  • Jaguar Emblem
  • Panther Emblem
  • Leopard Emblem

Final Playthrough
The final playthrough is a proof of you being a master of stealth in Metal Gear Solid 4 because the final playthrough is all about getting the Big Boss Emblem. Take note that you will be playing on The Boss Extreme which is the hardest difficulty so be prepared. You can start a new game plus here to have some carryovers from your previous playthroughs. Getting the Big Boss emblem should unlock 10 more along with it. My advice here is to watch Big Boss Emblem walkthroughs or speed runs because these walkthroughs will show you the best path to take to avoid detection and it will also show you easy ways of ending boss battles non-lethally easily. You don't have to mimic these walkthroughs perfectly, SAVE OFTEN when you are not feeling confident on certain parts of the game.

Possible trophies that you can earn:
Sounds of the Battlefield
Infinite Ammo
Stealth Camouflage
The Legendary Hero

Emblems that you can earn:
  • Big Boss Emblem
  • Foxhound Emblem
  • Fox Emblem
  • Hound Emblem
  • Mantis Emblem
  • Wolf Emblem
  • Raven Emblem
  • Octopus Emblem
  • Pigeon Emblem
  • Scorpion Emblem

Roadmap 2

This roadmap is for veterans who already know the game very much. I suggest doing the Big Boss Emblem as early as the 3rd playthrough so that the remaining 5 playthroughs is just a speed run.

First Playthrough
For the first playthrough, just enjoy and play the game. Aim for the Centipede Emblem on this run. In addition to having 25 continues for the Centipede Emblem, aim on having over 51 continues so that the Corpse Camo is available on the next playthrough so that you will earn I Just Don't Fear Death trophy. You can skip the cutscenes for now and go for it on the next playthrough.

Story related trophies:
Liquid Sun

Second Playthrough
Second playthrough is the most boring part since you will be grinding for specific emblems here. Since you will be spending 35 hours, this is the good time to watch the cutscenes and aim for the Flashback mania trophy. If you had at least 51 continues in your previous playthrough then the Corpse Camo is now in your inventory and you can use this to earn I Just Don't Fear Death trophy

Possible trophies that you can earn:
Divine Wind
Flashback mania
I Just Don't Fear Death

Emblems that you can earn:
  • Bear Emblem

  • Scarab Emblem
  • Frog Emblem
  • Bee Emblem
  • Pig Emblem
  • Cow Emblem
  • Crocodile Emblem
  • Giant Panda Emblem
  • Puma Emblem
  • Chicken Emblem

Third Playthrough
Vets should have no problem with this playthrough because the third playthrough is about getting the Big Boss Emblem. One of the rewards after completing this run is the Stealth Camo which will make the remaining 5 playthroughs much easier to do.

Possible trophies that you can earn:
Infinite Ammo
Stealth Camouflage

Emblems that you can earn:
  • Big Boss Emblem
  • Foxhound Emblem
  • Fox Emblem
  • Hound Emblem
  • Mantis Emblem
  • Wolf Emblem
  • Raven Emblem
  • Octopus Emblem
  • Pigeon Emblem
  • Scorpion Emblem

Fourth Playthrough
Now that you have the Stealth Camo, equip this and you can grind for the CQC hold and Knife kills quickly without worrying of getting detected. You should now also have all weapons by this time and thus you will unlock the Little Gray Emblem in this run.

Emblems that you can earn:
  • Assassin Emblem
  • Tarantula Emblem
  • Little Gray Emblem

Fifth to Final Playthrough
From the emblems stated below, it is up to you to decide on what emblem you will take on first. You need to do each emblem on different playthroughs because these emblems have different combinations of conditions. Once you are done with the requirements on each emblems, just equip Stealth Camo and run until the end of the game.

Once done with all these playthroughs, you will get the Snake Eater iPod track and also Sounds of the Battlefield and finally the platinum.

Possible trophies that you can earn:
Sounds of the Battlefield
The Legendary Hero

Emblems that you can earn:
  • Spider Emblem

You Enjoy the Killing, that's Why
Killed many enemies in one area, and vomited

You can do this trophy in any act but the best place to do this is in Act 2 when you reach the Vista Mansion. The requirement is for you to kill 50+ enemies, doesn't matter if they are PMC or rebels. When Snake had enough, you will trigger a flashback where Liquid will mention "You Enjoy all the Killing that's why" resulting to Snake vomiting and you will earn the trophy.

[top]
Laughing Octopus Doll
Defeated Laughing Octopus by non-lethal means, and obtained the Laughing Octopus Doll.

Missable trophy.

You will face Laughing Octopus in Act 2: Solid Sun. The battle will start after defeating the FROGs in the laboratory. To earn this trophy, you need to defeat Laughing Octopus on her beast form by reducing her Psyche bar to zero so that you will find the doll on the next battle.

After defeating her beast form, a second battle will start and we'll call this the beauty form. During the second battle, search the bedrooms to find the doll sitting on a bed. You will find the doll in the Laughing Beauty battle video below at 5:48. If you defeat Laughing Beauty non-lethally you will earn the Laughing Beauty facecamo.

Frog Soldier Doll
Escaped the Haven Troopers in the Middle East by non-lethal means, and obtained the Frog Soldier Doll.

Missable trophy.

You will encounter the FROG unit for the first time during Act 1 at the Advent Palace. You have to escape the area by taking them out non-lethally (Tranquilizer gun, Stun Grenade, Drum Can and the like). If you take out FROGs that hangs on the wall and they will fall down, this will not register as a kill. After the fight, you will find the doll in the garage where you will start off.

After defeating her beast form, a second battle will start and during the second battle, go to the top of the tower to find the doll. If you defeat Raging Beauty non-lethally you will earn the Raging Beauty facecamo.

After defeating her beast form, a second battle will start and during the second battle, just turn around and you will find the doll on a wall behind you. If you defeat Crying Beauty non-lethally you will earn the Crying Beauty facecamo.

Screaming Mantis Doll
Defeated Screaming Mantis by non-lethal means, and obtained the Screaming Mantis Doll.

Missable trophy.

You will face Screaming Mantis in Act 5: Old Sun. The battle will start once you enter the ship and after fighting a couple of FROG unit soldiers. The title is misleading since the only way to defeat Screaming Mantis (Beast form) is by using the Mantis doll. Even though you will reduce both her HP and Psyche bar, you will still find the doll on the Screaming Beauty battle. You will find the doll on the corridor where you entered.

After defeating her beast form, a second battle will start and during the second battle, go back to the corridor where you entered to find the doll. If you defeat Screaming Beauty non-lethally you will earn the Screaming Beauty facecamo.

Divine Wind
Caused a "divine wind" using the Tanegashima

The Tanegashima is a shotgun that you will only get by buying it from Drebin at a cost of 1,000,000 DP. To get a discount at this weapon, wait until Act 5 because Drebin will be selling his goods with a 50% discount of the original price. The "divine wind" is like a whirlwind/hurricane but the gun will not always do this because there's only a certain percentage of the gun causing this "divine wind". One place where you can make this "divine wind" appear with a 90% chance is in Act 1, in the area where you will obtain the drum can.

[top]
Handle With Caution
Broke off the most important part of a statue.

Missable trophy.

You will only earn this trophy in Act 1: Liquid Sun. You will find the statue on the area before you meet up with the Mk. II of Otacon. You should be able to spot this statue at the beginning of the area. Instead of climbing up the stairs, go down and you should spot 2 statues. Climb up to this platform where the statues at and to break this "important part" of the statue, you need to press a couple of times entering and exiting from cover.

Hands Up!
Held an enemy soldier at gunpoint and performed a body check

You will earn this trophy when you perform a hold up. To perform a hold up, pull out your gun first but don't aim it yet then sneak behind an enemy, once you are close to him, that's the only time you will aim your gun. When done correctly, Snake will say "freeze" or "hands up" and things like that and the enemy will drop his weapon.

[top]
Flashback mania
Viewed all flashbacks

Missable trophy.

This trophy is time consuming because you have to watch almost every cutscene in the game. I can confirm that for the trophy, you will only need the flashbacks which requires you to press the button prompt that appears on the top right corner of the screen. Audio flashbacks are not required because I went through the game without triggering some of these audio flashbacks and I only went for button prompt flashbacks which shows images. The button prompts are either or . It may depend on the region of your PS3.

If you missed some flashbacks, you don't have to worry about watching everything again because the ones you have previously viewed are carried over and you only need to watch the flashback you missed.
