[top]Introduction

NBA 2K10: Draft Combine is a pre add-on content for the highly anticipated NBA 2K10. In this game, you are an up and coming rookie entering the NBA Draft. Through the best customization system the NBA 2K series have created to date, you will have the ability to create your player to put through the NBA Combine. This is the place where only the top rookies catch the attention of NBA Scouts. Through numerous drills and 5 on 5 scrimmage games, you will gain skill points to either impress the NBA teams or force them to look at a different prospect. Do you have the skills to take over the NBA Combine?

The trophies in NBA 2K10 are very clear and straightforward. In this guide, I offer various tips on not only how to earn these trophies but how to become a better NBA 2K Baller. Let's get started.

[top]Tips and Strategies

  • Create a point guard. The point guard is the leader on the floor and constantly starts with the ball. When playing as the point, you have the most control over the team. As the PG, your job is to distribute the ball. I like passing to the big men especially if they are calling for the ball in the low post.
  • Don't be selfish. In a game where it only lets you utilize one player, it can be tough not to throw up shots. But unless you are a magician on offense, I can guarantee you that you will have no success by shooting just with yourself. Try to look for players calling for the ball or players cutting to the basket.
  • Stick with your man on defense. The best and easiest way to always complete your defensive objectives is to put a body on your man so he isn't wide open. Just follow where he goes. If you find yourself having trouble with keeping up with your opponent's movements, a great tip I can give you here is to use lock-on defense which can be done by holding . Lock-On Defense automatically haves your player move along with your man which makes it a lot easier to stay in front of him.
  • Perhaps one of the best tips I can give you is using the most fundamental and basic play in basketball which is called the Pick and Roll. If utilized correctly, you will either score or dish one for an assist every time. It is best done if you are a guard. To set up a Pick and Roll, hold down . You will now see a big man, either the PF or the C come up next to your defender and block him (set a pick). Now your job as the PG is to make sure your defender runs into the pick. So dribble around the pick and towards the basket. At this point, you will have the option of shooting or passing to your buddy who set the pick and is now rolling to the basket. If he is open, you can pass to him for the easy assist or if you are unsure, just pass it to the outside and reset your offense.

The Legend Begins
Create your player

When you first play the game, the first thing you do before you play any basketball is create your player. The customization system 2K has incorporated is incredible. You can edit the morphing features on your face, the tape you put around your fingers, and a whole lot more. Probably one of my favorite features is the ability to customize your shoes. You can edit the color of every last detail on your pair of Nike's or Jordan's. You can also edit your jump shot and iso moves. If you plan on getting NBA 2K10, I would highly recommend making your player exactly how you want him instead of just rushing through this stage to get the easy trophy. I say this because there are 3 trophies in NBA 2K10 that involve the "My Player" mode and with the ability to import your player from this game into 2K10, I believe you will have an overall more satisfying experience rather then playing NBA 2K10 with as a guy who doesn't look like you at all, or starting all over again from scratch.

Show me the Skills
Spend Skill Points to improve an attribute

To go spend your skill points, flick the right stick to access the menu and go to My Player > Skill Points. Here you can select from a variety of stats and skills to choose to upgrade. You are given 1000 skill points to start out with so you can go ahead and improve one of your stats right after you finish creating your player. If you are just playing for the trophy, you are welcome to improve any of the attributes you may see. However, if you are serious about the game, I would improve either the "Layup", "Shot Close" or "Shot Medium" if you are a guard or small forward, or "Rebounding" or "Shot Inside" if you are a power forward or center. I think these are the most practical attributes to improve on at least for the first time you spend your skill points. "Speed" is also a nice attribute to improve since it's always good to be faster, but it's also the most expensive attribute to boost at over 1000 points, so you won't be able to purchase this upgrade without earning some skill points yourself. When you are done, press start and confirm your changes and the trophy is yours.

Game 1
Complete the first NBA Draft Combine game

Flick the right stick to access the menu and go to Play Now > Next Match to play your first NBA Draft Combine game.

This is where you have the chance to improve your NBA Draft Stock. You will be given a list of 3 objectives to complete during your match. Generally, you will be given an offensive objective, a defensive objective, and a teammate grade objective. One thing about this game that I particularly don't like is the teammate grading system. It can take you 3-5 things to improve a letter grade, but it can take only 1 turnover to go down a letter grade. Just play smart. When you do not have the ball on offense, give your teammates space. Without the ball, I like to cut to the basket and sometimes, your teammate will find you and you'll get an easy layup or at least a "Good Shot Selection" plus. And on defense, do not constantly attempt to steal the ball. Also do not leave your defensive assignment wide open without probable cause. A probable cause would be going for a double team on a center in the low post.

These are just tips if you want to do well in these games. If you are only interested in the trophies, you can just complete the game for these trophies. Yes, you can fail all of your objectives and lose the game and still obtain these 6 trophies.

Practice Makes Perfect
Complete 3 Drills

Flick your right stick to access the menu. You now want to go to Play Now > Drills. You will be given a selection of drills to choose from. The easiest drill in the game is Shooting where you shoot the ball from close, mid, and 3 point range to gain points. To shoot, I always recommend using the shot stick which is the right stick. Pull down the right stick to begin your shot and release the right stick at the top of your jump shot for the best chance of snapping the net. To accumulate the highest points I would take all my shots within mid range unless you have a terrible shooting ability. By shooting in mid range, it will be easier to rebound or grab a new ball as opposed to if you fired your shots from the 3-point line.

You can do this drill 3 times to get the trophy or you can play 3 different drills. You do not have to pass the drill or reach the bronze set of points.

Season Preparation
Win five Scrimmage games

Flick the right stick to access the menu and go to Play Now > Scrimmage. In scrimmage mode, you play one 5 minute quarter and your team must score more points then your opponent to win the game.

Use the tips found in this guide such as the Pick and Roll and Lock-On Defense to help you find ways to win. In scrimmage mode, there are no refs and no fouls. I have seen some websites suggest you take advantage of this and keep going for the steal while on defense. This is a smart strategy but I would not recommend this for the simple fact that after fifteen 5-minute quarters, it will probably become a bad habit. If it helps you, I am not here to stop you but if you are interested in playing NBA 2K10, I can guarantee you that you'll fall into the habit of going for cheap steals and unless you tweak the sliders, you will get called for the reach-in foul more often then not. I'm not saying stop the steals completely, since steals are a great way to start a fast-break opportunity. I'm saying try not to abuse it :]

Anyway, after your 5th and 15th win, you will have both trophies.

Please note: a tie will count as a win. Thanks to MillardMavs for the find.
