[top]Tips & Strategies

1) Hard is available from the beginning. Since there are difficulty-dependent trophies, you could save time by doing your first playthrough on Hard.

2) Find out how many collectibles you're missing in each level by pausing the game during the level in question. Follow the collectibles guides I've provided below.

3) Smash all barrels and boxes you can find. These release stars, health, and they're sometimes blocking your view to collectibles.

4) You can purchase upgrades that increase amount of Sheriff Stars released by enemies/boxes as well as increase the distance you can be from Sheriff Stars to pick them up. Getting to 200,000 is going to be a real grind, so consider buying these upgrades first before you get anything else.

5) The game autosaves after each collectible you gather so you don't have to worry about going back for them if you die.

6) Hold to strafe. This allows you to dodge enemy bullets while still auto-aiming and pelting them with your own.

7) After your main playthrough(s), be sure to avoid starting a new story. This way all your stars, upgrades, and collectibles will carry over. Feel free to use the level select as much as you want.

[top]Cheats, Glitches, & Exploits

The game has an interface for entering cheats, but no cheat codes have been reported yet. As such, there has been no report on whether or not using cheats disables trophies.

[top]Roadmap

Step 1: Playthough on Hard; Nab all Collectibles. Hero of the West and Legend of the West require you to complete the game on Hard. This option is available from the start and it is NOT difficult at all.
Note: I've listed the locations of all the collectibles for each chapter in the trophy descriptions below. Follow these guides during your main playthrough or use them to find any collectibles you may have missed.

Early on, focus on meleeing enemies and using manual aim to take out enemies to earn Sting Like a Bee and Taking Aim, respectively.
  • Play Level 1. - Follow the collectible guide and try to complete this level without dying in order to earn It's Not Easy Being Green. When you're taught how to uppercut enemies, perform this attack on an enemy (+) and then shoot him a few times () to earn Clay Pigeon. Defeat a "shooter" (an enemy with a gun) using only melee attacks in order to earn Honorable Cowboy.
  • Play Level 2. - You ride a roadrunner for the first part of this level. Try to catch up to the Water Train without dying in order to earn Meep! Meep!. Play this whole level without using melee attacks, even while breaking boxes, barrels, and fish bowls in order to earn Gun Happy. Try to nail three consecutive bullseyes during the Golden Bullet segment in order to earn 100% Bull. During this level, you'll fight many enemies on flatbed cars of the train. Shoot, melee, slam, or uppercut and launch 10 of them off the train to earn Good Air Day. You'll fight Bad Bill at the end of this level. Shoot the dynamite while he's holding it above his head to earn They Got a Pill for That.
  • Play Level 3. - Follow the collectibles guide. You'll have your first encounter with a charging rabbit. Take him out using only melee attacks ( and combos) without taking any damage to earn Tank Buster. Try to nail three consecutive bullseyes during the Golden Bullet segment in order to earn 100% Bull.
  • Play Level 4. - Follow the collectibles guide. Try to nail three consecutive bullseyes during the Golden Bullet segment in order to earn 100% Bull.
  • Play Level 5. - Follow the collectibles guide. Try to nail three consecutive bullseyes during the Golden Bullet segment in order to earn 100% Bull. If you missed it earlier, try to take out the charging rabbit using only melee attacks ( and combos) without taking any damage to earn Tank Buster.
  • Play Level 6. - Follow the collectibles guide. At the start of this level you'll want to trick a Jumper (a rabbit that jumps into the air and tries to land on you) into landing on one of the groups of large red shotgun shells. Linger by one of the groups until you see a Jumper's target appear, then move away, watch him explode, and earn Demolitions.
  • Play Level 7. - Follow the collectibles guide. During this level you'll have to protect a gate from attack by a massive zombie hoard. You'll earn I Shot the Sheriff if you can take out six of them at a time. Hint: this will come without any effort. At the end of this level, you'll ride your first and only bat. Try to finish the ride without dying in order to earn This is Bat Country!.
  • Play Levels 8 and 9. - Follow the collectibles guides.

Step 2: Mop Up Everything Not-Related to Sheriff Stars. Without starting a new story, use the level select to clean up everything you missed (other than Sheriff Star trophies). See the individual trophy descriptions below for help.

Step 3: Grind for 200,000 Sheriff Stars. After your main playthrough and after you've used the level select to clean up all of the non-star trophies, farm stars by replaying level 1 or level 5. Make sure to avoid starting a new story so your star totals will carry over. Fully upgrade your star-related attributes as early as possible to decrease the amount of time you have to spend grinding for stars.

Good news! A new tip submitted by DarthLos23 will make grinding chapter 1 for stars much more efficient:

(Like the TROPHY: CLAY PIGEON) Try to have your gun upgraded to have a 25 round clip. The enemies will drop way more stars than just regularly shooting them or melee hits. Continue to use this method on most of the enemies in the level. I usually finished a round with 15,800-17,800 stars. Hope this is helpful to future GAMERS! like vader13 haha

Clatto Verata N
Complete Zombie Invasion

This trophy is story-related and it cannot be missed. You encounter your first puzzle in this level. You need to light up the tiles on the floor so it matches the pattern of the window. You can step off at any time to take another look at the window. Work your way from the back of the room one row at a time. After each row you can run off the side and glance at the window without messing up rows you've completed.

Or, light these ones up:

(bird's eye view)
Top Row: 3, 4, 5, 6
2nd Row: 2, 7, 9
3rd Row: 1, 4, 8
4th Row: 2, 7, 9
Bottom Row: 3, 4, 5, 6

In the next-to-last part of the level you have to defend a metal gated barrier from a massive hoard of zombies by clubbing explosives at them. This part can be tricky on Hard, but recall that you can drastically affect ball flight using the left and right sticks. This helps out quite a bit.

In the final part of this level you travel by bat for a bit. Try not to die to earn This is Bat Country!

There are three requirements you must complete to pop this trophy.

1) Finish all nine levels on Hard mode.

2) Purchase all three levels of all 17 upgrades from Wounded Bird, the salesman. Buy these items from him by visiting him during a level (tale). You can do this on any difficulty. After your first playthrough, avoid starting a new story in order to get these to carry over. You can then use the level select as much as you want.

3) Find and mine all Mining Sites and find and destroy all Fish Bowls. I've listed the locations for these items under each of their respective story-related level completion trophies above. If you complete one playthrough on Hard, you probably won't have earned enough stars to pop this trophy. You can accumulate more stars using level select while you're mopping up other trophies. If you want to farm stars, try playing level 1 or level 5 repeatedly. Level 1 has a long, boring, unskippable cutscene at the beginning, but you'll get about 9,000 stars every time. Just hit "restart tale" before you battle the large spiky rolly-polly at the end of level 1. Note that you'll need to have all your star-related upgrades fully leveled up to earn this number of stars each time. Level 5 is much longer but you should earn quite a few more stars each time through.

[top]
It's Not Easy Being Green

Also, level 6 is pretty short and easy, even on Hard.

[top]

Manual aim by holding and fire by tapping . Take out 20 enemies with this technique to pop this trophy.

[top]
Honorable Cowboy

A "shooter" is an enemy with a gun. These first appear in the first level of the game. Melee them with until they're dead and this trophy will pop.

[top]
The Cleaner
Defeat 500 enemies

This trophy will likely pop during natural gaming, but if not, it'll pop while you're farming for Sheriff Stars. After you finish your playthrough(s), avoid starting a new story so your previous star totals carry over. See Red, White & Blue Sevens for more details.

[top]
Widow Maker

[top]
Tank Buster
Defeat a huge charging rabbit using only melee attacks, without taking any damage from him

You first encounter this type of enemy in level 3 after the Golden Bullet segment and after you defeat a large group of enemies in an open area.

The rabbit charges in a straight line and gets dazed when he runs into walls. Dodge his attacks and hit him with 2-3 times when he's stunned, then get away. Repeat this process 5-6 times without taking damage and when he's dead and this trophy will pop.

If you do take damage from him, just let him take you down. You'll respawn at the same part and get another chance at this. If you can't get this in level 3, keep playing the story; there will be more chances. If you still can't get it, finish your playthrough, lower the difficulty, and replay level 3 using level select.

[top]
Demolitions
Lure a Jumper to land on a shotgun shell

A "Jumper" is a medium-sized enemy who leaps high into the air and tries to slam himself onto you. You'll see a large flashing white target on the ground indicating where he's going to land.

A "shotgun shell" is a cluster of three large red bullets (shells) standing upright. These are scattered throughout various levels and can be quite helpful in taking out enemies.

In level 6 you'll encounter quite a few Jumpers and shotgun shells at the same time. Just linger around a shell until a Jumper targets you. Then get out of the way and watch in enjoyment as the enemy gets obliterated and your trophy pops.

[top]
Clay Pigeon
Launch an enemy with an uppercut then shoot him three times

To perform an uppercut get near an enemy, hold , and press . The game auto-aims for you, even on Hard, so just shoot your newly-airborn assailant a few times while he's off the ground to pop this trophy. You first learn about the uppercut in level 1, so give it a whirl then and you'll most likely succeed.

[top]
Good Air Day
Launch 10 enemies off the train in Water Train

While on the Water Train during level 2 you'll have to battle enemies in closed traincars and on open flatbeds. You can get enemies to fall off the sides of flatbeds by melee attacking with , shooting them, or upper-cutting with +. Use any of these techniques to knock ten enemies off the train to pop this trophy.

[top]
Spread the Love
Acquire the Spreadshot and take out 10 enemies with it

The "Spreadshot" is one of three gun powerups you get from jacks-in-the-box. The powerups you get from these boxes are not random--for example, the one at the end of the first level will always contain the Blaster powerup.

The Spreadshot powerup causes your gun to spray ammo, almost in a shotgun-like fashion. You can purchase upgrades increase the duration of this powerup.

To pop this trophy, you need to find and collect a Spreadshot powerup and take out ten or more enemies with it before it expires. This is more difficult on Medium and Hard because the enemies are more resilient. It's also more difficult if you haven't upgraded the lifespan of your Spreadshot powerups, so don't worry if you don't pop this trophy on your first playthrough.

The best place to earn this trophy is at the beginning of level 6. The jack-in-the-box there has this powerup and there are more than ten enemies around. Set the difficulty to Easy and upgrade the lifespan of your Spreadshot powerup, take out all the enemies here, and enjoy this trophy.

[top]
I Got a Present For Ya!
Acquire the Launcher and take out 10 enemies with it

The "Launcher" is one of three gun powerups you get from jacks-in-the-box. The powerups you get from these boxes are not random--for example, the one at the end of the first level will always contain the Blaster powerup.

The Launcher powerup causes your gun to lob explosives. You can purchase upgrades that increase the duration of this powerup.

To pop this trophy, you need to find and collect a Launcher powerup and take out ten or more enemies with it before it expires. This is more difficult on Medium and Hard because the enemies are more resilient. It's also more difficult if you haven't upgraded the lifespan of your Launcher powerups, so don't worry if you don't pop this trophy on your first playthrough.

The best place to earn this trophy is before the middle of level 5. After you get your gun you'll come to an open area with a campfire, two jacks-in-the-box, and a bunch of enemies. The box in the back right of the area contains the Launcher powerup. If you fail there, the area right after that has also has a box with this powerup. Set the difficulty to Easy and upgrade the lifespan of your Launcher powerup, take out all the enemies here, and enjoy this trophy.

[top]
A Tommy Gun!
Acquire the Blaster and take out 10 enemies with it

The "Blaster" is one of three gun powerups you get from jacks-in-the-box. The powerups you get from these boxes are not random--for example, the one at the end of the first level will always contain the Blaster powerup.

The Blaster powerup significantly increases firing rate of your gun and gives you an infinitely-large magazine for the duration of the powerup. You can purchase upgrades that increase the duration of this powerup.

To pop this trophy, you need to find and collect a Launcher powerup and take out ten or more enemies with it before it expires. This is more difficult on Medium and Hard because the enemies are more resilient. It's also more difficult if you haven't upgraded the lifespan of your Blaster powerups, so don't worry if you don't pop this trophy on your first playthrough.

The best place to earn this trophy is in level 1, in the only area that has a jack-in-the-box. When you collect this powerup near the end of level 1, a bunch of enemies will spawn. Set the difficulty to Easy and upgrade the lifespan of your Blaster powerup, take out all the enemies here, and enjoy this trophy.

[top]
Rock and Roll Cowboy
Survive the crumbling canyon in The Return of Rattlesnake Jake

This trophy is story-related and it cannot be missed. Before you fight Jake at the end of this level, you'll have to sprint across a series of collapsing rock bridges. Get to the other side to pop this trophy. If you die, you'll still earn this trophy.

[top]
McClane Worthy
Escape the exploding train in Water Train

This trophy is story-related and it cannot be missed. In level 2, after the roadrunner sequence, you'll work your way through a few traincars. Soon an enemy will shoot at you from above, igniting a large collection of fireworks in the process. [top]
This is Bat Country!
Ride a bat for an entire level without dying

You'll experience your only bat-ride at the end of level 7. Make it to the end of the journey without dying to pop this trophy. If you fail on your first playthrough, just finish the remaining levels, lower the difficulty, and replay this level using the tale select feature.

[top]
Meep! Meep!
Ride a roadrunner for an entire level without dying

You first ride a roadrunner during the first part of level 2. Make it all the way to the Water Train without dying to pop this trophy. Do your best not to jump too early and make sure to look ahead for large wooden signs with bullseyes painted on them. These signs block your path and do damage to you, so take them out by shooting them. When the giant cacti fall, move to the side of the course opposite of the base of the cactus.

There is another chance to do this at the end of level 5.

[top]
Thirsty Work
Defeat Bad Bill in Water Train

This trophy is story-related and cannot be missed. You fight Bad Bill at the end of level 2, on the Water Train. He'll be above you throwing dynamite at you. Deal damage by shooting him or by shooting the dynamite while he's holding it above is head.

Try to shoot the dynamite because a) it takes away 25% of his health and b) it'll unlock They Got a Pill for That if you didn't already have it. Also, each time you take away 1/4 of his health he'll hide and sent enemies at you. Knock them off the sides of the train by shooting (), meleeing (), or upper-cutting them (+) ten times to earn Good Air Day.

[top]
Around the Bowl
Defeat Bad Bill in Forbidden Mine

This trophy is story-related and it cannot be missed. At the end of level 3 you'll face Bad Bill again. He'll be shooting at you from above, but he'll be precariously placed under a large bell. [top]
Who's Bad Now?
Defeat Bad Bill in Rodent Clan

This trophy is story-related and it cannot be missed. You'll face Bad Bill again at the end of level 5. Dodge his attacks and shoot him (a lot) until he dies to pop this trophy. If you need health, shoot his minions for a while.

[top]
Snake Charmer
Defeat Rattlesnake Jake in The Return of Rattlesnake Jake

This trophy is story-related and it cannot be missed. You fight Rattlesnake Jake at the end of level 6. If you missed it, this is a good level to try and get Gun Happy as this is a pretty short tale and you can shoot the Fish Bowls rather than slamming them with .

Jake will ground-pound. Double-jump when you see him getting ready to do this. After a ground-pound he'll yell at you. Fire as many rounds down his throat as you can. After a while he'll unleash some minions on you. Take them out if you can, but his next ground-pound should wipe them out. Just repeat this process until he's dead and you'll pop this trophy.

[top]
The Bigger They Are
Defeat Lars in Land of Giants

This trophy is story-related and it cannot be missed. At the end of level 4 you'll have to using your golf club to fire explosives at Lars' head. Aim a little left and err on the side of under-shooting him. It's easier if you wait until he's pretty close and then only charge up your shot 20-30%. Hit him three times in a row to pop this trophy and move on to the next level.

[top]
Thorough Examination
Defeat the Alien Probe in Alien Invasion

This trophy is story-related and it cannot be missed. Towards the end of level 9, you'll fight the spherical, one-eyed, Death-Star-like Alien Probe. Finish the probe off to pop this trophy.

[top]
I Shot the Sheriff
Defeat 6 zombies with one golf shot

It's nearly impossible to miss this trophy. During level 7 you'll have to keep a massive hoard of zombies from destroying a metal gate by launching explosives with your golf club. As many as 25 enemies will spawn simultaneously and they'll all cluster together, so just launch explosives at them and this trophy will pop without any real effort.

[top]
Bull's Eye!
Hit a bullseye in Golden Bullet mode for the first time

You learn about Golden Bullet mode at the end of level 1. In Golden Bullet mode, you essentially fire and then pilot a fly-by-wire rocket, rather reminiscent of Perfect Dark's Slayer rocket launcher. Use the left stick to aim for the center of the large red bullseye. Hit the bullseye once to pop this trophy. You know you've scored a bullseye by the strange sound and "bullseye!" symbol that pop up.

[top]
100% Bull
Hit 3 bullseyes in a row

There are many opportunities to earn this trophy during the game. You'll first be introduced to Golden Bullet segments in level 1, but there are only two targets there. Every other opportunity has at least three targets and as many as five. A few specific levels that have enough consecutive targets include levels 2, 3, 4, and 5.

[top]
They Got a Pill For That
Shoot Bad Bill's dynamite bundle before he throws it in Water Train

At the end of level 2, on the Water Train, you'll fight Bad Bill. He'll be above you throwing dynamite at you. First he holds a bundle of dynamite over his head for a few seconds, then he chucks it at you. Shoot it and make it explode in his face to take away 25% of his health and pop this trophy.

[top]
Crate Hate
Smash open 250 crates

This trophy will pop during natural gaming. You need to be smashing everything you see in order to eventually accumulate 200,000 Sheriff Stars, and if you're constantly doing so, this trophy will pop during your first playthrough.
