Undead Nightmare
is a downloadable expansion of Rockstar Games' highly-acclaimed open world western Red Dead Redemption. Following on the heels of the Outlaws to the End Co-op Mission Pack, the Legends and Killers Pack and the Liars and Cheats Pack, this downloadable content adds a lengthy single player campaign including all new missions, weapons, characters and animals, and two new online multiplayer game types - Undead Overrun and Land Grab.

This trophy guide will only cover trophies included in the Undead Nightmare pack. If you are looking for the trophy guides for the main game or other DLC packs, please click the links above.

Please note: As with all DLC, the trophies in this pack will show up in your trophy list whether or not you buy the DLC, but they can only be earned after purchasing this DLC pack. They are not required for the Platinum trophy.

[top]Tips & Strategies

  • There are no gunsmiths or merchants available during Undead Nightmare, and you start with a very minimal group of weapons. Try to use the torch and other weapons acquired during the game and be sure to search the corpses of all the undead you kill by pressing to stock up on ammo. Anyone who is carrying an ammo belt will give you a decent amount of bullets of one kind or another. You can also get quite a bit of ammo by completing challenges and opening chests in towns you have saved.
  • Do what you can to keep your original horse or one of the Four Horses of the Apocalypse once you get them. If your horse dies and you have to whistle for another one, you'll typically get an undead steed, which is really fast, but also really annoying because it likes to run off in random directions, regardless of which way you tell it to go. If one of the Four Horses dies, you cannot get it back until you finish the single player campaign.
  • The key to combat during Undead Nightmare is to keep moving. Since the undead don't have guns, they need to be close to you to kill you. Even the Retchers, who spit acid at you, can't hit you if you keep moving. If you find yourself surrounded, spam to run away and give yourself some space, then turn around and start shooting again. Casual targeting is also a big help if you find yourself struggling, as it will basically give you a headshot with every bullet you fire if you use it correctly.
  • The game refers to all missions as "Survivor" missions, but they are listed below as Survivor missions and Stranger missions, since they show up differently on the map and serve different purposes. Survivor missions are marked on your map by letters, like Story missions were in the original game, while Stranger missions are marked with green question marks.

[top]Roadmap

  • Main Playthrough - Work your way west out of Blackwater, completing all Survivor and Stranger missions (don't worry about missing souls yet) and saving all available areas in West Elizabeth before moving on to New Austin. Do the same thing in New Austin before moving on to Mexico. After you finish the American Imperialism mission and move into Mexico, concentrate on getting Spinning Plates done (see trophy description below), and by the time you get through Mexico and finish the Survivor (story) missions, you should have that one plus all story related trophies and Six Years In The Making.
  • Clean Up - Go back and do anything you need to do to finish up all of your Ambient Challenges, Missing Souls and Outfits. This will get you Chupathingy, Fan Service, Mad Marston: The Trail Warrior and Zed's Dead, Baby.
  • Multiplayer - Grab a few friends and tackle the Undead Overrun game. You should be able to get to wave 15 in 10+ minutes to get Smoke that Skinwagon, and then work on finding a full free roam or a large group of friends for Kingpin.

Spinning Plates
Have every territory saved at the same time during the Undead Nightmare

When you kill off all of the undead in a given town or area, it is considered "saved." This means that you can move around that area a little more freely without as much fear of attack, and that you can use safe houses there to sleep (save) in and fast travel to and from. You also receive a new weapon with each area that you clear out, and each area generally has one or more containers in them (marked on the map by green dots) that give you ammunition.

Unfortunately, if you are away from a town for too long, it becomes overrun again, forcing you to step in and redeem it once more. If a town becomes overrun, the survivors there start dying. If you leave it too long, all of the survivors will die, but you can still "save" it for the purposes of this trophy.

A saved location is marked with a blue cross. A location you have not yet encountered is marked with a red question mark in a circle. When an area comes under attack after being saved, it is marked with a white hand inside a green circle, when it has been overrun, it is a white hand inside a red circle and when all survivors have been lost, an upside-down cross is displayed.

To unlock this trophy, you have to have all locations saved at the same time. The easiest method to get this is to make sure you have saved every area in West Elizabeth and New Austin before beginning American Imperialism, which takes you into Mexico. After completing that mission, ignore all other survivor and stranger missions and just go around saving towns. If you've gotten to this point fast enough, you won't have to go back to any areas to re-save them, but if you do, just use the fast travel from one of your safe houses to go to the nearest town that is saved and redo the ones you need.

Here are the required locations:

Chupathingy
Find and kill a chupacabra.

The Chupacabra is a mythical creature that can frequently be found in the area north of Torquemada where you see the three horses on the map, although it can spawn just about anywhere in Mexico, with other common locations being the areas around Chuparosa and Sepulcro. You will see the on-screen notification and the blue circle on the map when you get close.

It kind of looks like an undead hyena and is very fast.

Note: Finding and killing the chupacabra is also Rank 5 of the Undead Hunter challenge, and you cannot find this creature until you have unlocked the first four ranks of that challenge.

Fan Service
Find and break a Unicorn.

The Unicorn is found in the same area north of Torquemada, with the three horses on the map. The difference is that you will not get the mythical creature notification nor the blue circle with the Unicorn - you just have to look around for it. The good news is it's relatively easy to identify, because it's a white horse with rainbows coming out of its arse, butterflies fluttering around it and a horn on its head.

Break it like you would any other horse in Red Dead Redemption and this trophy is yours.

Note: You are not able to find the Unicorn until after you have completed all five ranks of the Undead Hunter ambient challenge.

Six Years In The Making
Find and kill a sasquatch.

One of the first stranger missions available is Birth of the Conservation Movement, during which you're required to kill six Sasquatches (see Zed's Dead, Baby above). The first one you get will earn you this trophy. They're a bit bigger than people, hairy and very slow. They're found in Tall Trees and will die with one shot to the head.

Smoke That Skinwagon
Make it to wave 15 in Undead Overrun Gametype in Multiplayer.

Undead Overrun requires you and up to three friends to survive waves of increasingly difficult undead enemies. Although the trophy description says you need to make it to wave 15, we actually got it after only 13 waves, when we entered "sudden death."

This is not overly difficult with decent players, but here are a few tips:
  • Use Casual Targeting. You have to move fast to keep the game going long enough to get to level 15, and leaving it on casual almost guarantees a headshot every time.
  • Ultimately, you should choose the weapons you are most comfortable with, but the High Power Pistol seems to be the best for this game type - the rate of fire on that weapon makes it almost unstoppable.
  • Get to the coffins as soon as they appear, and have the other players defend the person opening it. In the last few rounds, this may not be practical, but if you've done it up to that point you shouldn't need them any more.
  • Keep moving, even running away from enemies if you need to. The undead don't have guns, so if they can't get close to you they can't kill you.
  • Try to build up kill chains. Once you get it up high enough, you'll get phosphorous coated bullets, which will set your enemies ablaze when you hit them. It's a big help in the later rounds.

Kingpin
Fight off 8 unique players during your time on top during Land Grab in Multiplayer Free Roam.

Land Grab starts when a player finds an area to capture and then defends it from other players in the free roam session.

To get this trophy, you have to kill eight different players while defending your post, before you claim the area. If you're doing this legit, you'll need to look around for a free roam session with plenty of people in it to maximize your chances. Unfortunately, that also means that there are more people trying to kill you. Kill eight different players while defending your post and this trophy is yours.

This trophy can be boosted, but it requires 9 players, and none of them can be in the posse of the person trying to get the trophy. Have everyone stand around in a circle, touch the post and then blast your "friends" one by one or, if they're bunched tightly enough together and you have some, toss a stick of dynamite at them.

Check out the Official Red Dead Redemption Boosting Thread to find partners to help you with this trophy.
