[top]Warning

If you own a digital copy of Red Dead Redemption, pay attention!

Following the closure of GameSpy, Red Dead Redemption received a new patch, 1.08. For the digital version, however, the patch reverts the game to 1.01. The patch allows you to play online without issue, but if you attempt to play the Undead Nightmare campaign, you'll run into literally dozens of game-breaking bugs and glitches that will really ruin your experience - character models will disappear entirely or be replaced by other characters or even animals (in the opening cinematic, John Marston is replaced by a whore, while Uncle will be invisible, only to turn into a cougar later on), your game will lag, and in some cases the game will completely freeze.

To avoid these problems, you'll need to uninstall the game and all DLC completely (because, for some reason, the patch doesn't install as Game Data), then redownload the base game and Undead Nightmare DLC only, taking care to not install the latest update (if you have PlayStation Plus, make sure to disable automatic game updates). Once you've completed the singleplayer portion of the DLC, you can download the update, thus re-enabling online multiplayer.

[top]Tips and Strategies

Undead can only be killed with headshots, fire, or explosives.

There are no shops in Undead Nightmare. Instead, ammunition is given as a reward for completing missions and challenge ranks, can be looted from corpses, or found in chests.

Once cleansed of the Undead, regions become Safehouses, allowing you to walk around unmolested, save your game, or fast-travel to other saved locations.

Executions can be performed by running at an Undead straight-on and firing your weapon (without aiming) at point-blank range ( is default). An Execution performed with a Revolver, Pistol, or Sawed-off Shotgun will allow you to keep moving forward without slowing, making such weapons your best bet in a hairy situation. An execution performed with a larger, slower weapon like a Repeater, Sniper Rifle, or two-handed Shotgun will cause you to stop for a moment in order to steady yourself.

Ammunition for your Blunderbuss can be created by opening your satchel, navigating to your Kit, and selecting Build: Blunderbuss Ammunition. Creating ammunition requires Undead body parts, which can be harvested from dead enemies. Firing the Blunderbuss at an enemy will completely disintegrate their body, leaving nothing to harvest.

Supply chests will appear in all saved regions. They contain a mixture of ammunition and other consumable items. If the Undead return to a region, saving it will cause the chests to respawn as well.

All Horses of the Apocalypse have unlimited stamina. However, feeding them an item that alters their stamina (an Apple, for instance), will cause them to lose that particular ability.

Spinning Plates
Have every territory saved at the same time during the Undead Nightmare

When you first start Undead Nightmare, your map is mostly empty. As you explore the world, new locations in your general vicinity - marked with a white question mark - will be added to your map. Upon entering a location for the first time, you'll be asked to help save it from the undead hordes, which you can do either by killing every undead in sight, or by helping the locals (usually by donating ammunition). Helping the locals is always the better option because it's low risk, takes less time, and the reward will always outweigh the cost.

Saved locations can be used as Safehouses (allowing you to save your game or fast-travel to another area), contain a few chests (marked with a green dot) which can be opened to replenish some of your ammo, and are marked on your map by a blue crucifix.

After a certain period of time, however, the undead will inevitably return, in which case you'll need to return to the area and save it once again. Doing so will restore its status as a safe area, and refresh all chests. Failure to defend a location will result in it being overrun, making it much harder to retake, and more vulnerable to future attacks.

To earn this trophy, you must have all 21 vulnerable locations 'saved' at the same time. Since just under half of them are in Nuevo Paraiso (Mexico), you won't be able to earn this trophy until you have completed the main story mission American Imperialism (during which you find passage to Nuevo Paraiso).

West Elizabeth
1. Blackwater
2. Manzanita Post
3. Cochinay
4. Pacific Union R.R. Camp
New Austin
1. Thieves' Landing
2. MacFarlane's Ranch
3. Armadillo
4. Twin Rocks
5. Plainview
6. Ridgewood Farm
7. Rathskeller Fork
8. Gaptooth Breach
Nuevo Paraiso
1. Nosalida
2. Escalera
3. Tesoro Azul
4. Chuparosa
5. Las Hermanas
6. Agave Viejo
7. Casa Madrugada
8. El Matadero
9. Torquemada
This trophy isn't particularly difficult at all. Simply progressing through the main story will take you all across the map, forcing you to discover all locations. Prioritize saving them over everything else, and make sure to return to a location as soon as it comes under attack. When you reach Nuevo Paraiso, work your way West before resuming the main missions (which will take you East). For me this trophy unlocked when I reached and liberated Torquemada in the far East.

Note: saving towns will also make completing Missing Person missions much easier.

Fan Service
Find and break a unicorn.

Before you can find and break a Unicorn, you must first kill a Chupacabra. The Unicorn will not spawn until this has been done. See Chupathingy for information on hunting a Chupacabra.

As soon as you have killed a Chupacabra, you'll want to head over to the far East of the map, to the area marked with three horses (Northwest of Torquemada). There you'll be able to find a Unicorn, which is guaranteed to spawn. Unlike other mythical creatures, you will receive no notification, and no blue circle will appear on your map to indicate the general spawn area. Unicorns, however, are very distinct, as they're a pure white color, surrounded by butterflies, and leave a rainbow trail in their wake. Simply ride up to it, lasso it, and break it in like any other steed.

Breaking a Unicorn is also give you the final piece required for the Undead Hunter/Army of the Undead outfit.

Chupathingy
Find and kill a chupacabra.

The Chupacabra is a mythical creature that looks somewhat like a Hyena. It appears only in Nuevo Paraiso (Mexico), after you have completed the first 4 ranks in the Undead Hunter Challenge. The creature has been sighted all over the map, and at different hours of the day, making it difficult to pin down an exact place and time to go hunting for it. I found it in the area between El Presidio and Torquemada, after searching 3-4 times.

When the creature finally appears, you'll receive a notification telling you that a mythical creature has appeared in the area, indicated by a large blue circle on your map. The Chupacabra can only be killed with a headshot. Killing it will complete the Undead Hunter Challenges, and you'll be rewarded with a LeMat Revolver and Evans Repeater.

Killing a Chupacabra will cause a Unicorn to spawn in the area to the Northwest of Torquemada.

Six Years In The Making
Find and kill a sasquatch.

Travel to Tanner's Reach, which is located in the Tall Trees region, Northwest of Manzanita Post. There you'll find a crazy frontiersman firing out into the woods. Speaking to him will initiate the Side Mission Birth of the Conservation Movement, a wonderfully ironic title given that your goal will be to hunt down and kill 5 Sasquatches.

With the mission started, a light green circle will appear on your map, indicating an area where a Sasquatch can be found. Travel to the area and start looking for a 7-8ft tall, hairy brown humanoid creature. Be wary of your surroundings, however, as the area will be full of Undead, Wolves, Cougars, and possibly even Bears.

When you find the Sasquatch, shoot it in the head as that is the only way to kill it. If it sees you coming, it will try to run, so you will need to either chase it down or use Dead-Eye. Killing your first Sasquatch will unlock this trophy.

Smoke That Skinwagon
Make it to wave 15 in Undead Overrun Gametype in Multiplayer.

Required Players: 2-4 (4 recommended)
Game Type: Undead Overrun

Undead Overrun is a survival mode featuring endless waves of Undead enemies. At the start of each wave, Undead will spawn, and a red meter will appear at the top of the screen, as well as a countdown timer. Players must kill enough of the Undead to fill the red meter (headshots and multi-kills fill it faster) before the timer runs out in order to complete the wave (filling the red meter also revives downed players). Failure to fill the meter before the timer runs out will result in sudden death, during which Undead will spawn infinitely until all players are dead.

To earn this trophy you must complete wave 14, and start wave 15. Since the number of players in the match doesn't affect the number of Undead in each wave, having a full lobby will go a long way to helping you reach your goal. This trophy is largely skill-based, so all I can do is give you tips.

Tips:
Headshots - a single shot to the head, regardless of the weapon, will kill an Undead. Always go for headshots.
Phosphorous - earning a 10-kill streak will grant you powerful Phosphorous rounds for 15-20 seconds.
Coffins - at the end of each wave a coffin will spawn in a random location. Open one for additional time, ammunition, and special items.
Bait - while Friendly Fire is activated, a downed player cannot be killed. Use a downed player to attract Undead, then toss some dynamite at them.
Class - the best class is easily the Long Shot. It comes with the Bolt Action Rifle, the High Power Pistol, and the Double-barreled Shotgun.
Teamwork - splitting up is the quickest way to get killed. Stick together and concentrate your fire. Only split up at the end to find the Coffin.

Kingpin
Fight off 8 unique players during your time on top during Land Grab in Multiplayer Free Roam.

Required Players: 9 minimum
Game Type: Land Grab (MacFarlane's Ranch recommended)

Land Grab is a King of the Hill game mode in which 3-16 players fight over a small area of control in one of 7 locations in Normal or Hardcore Free Roam. They are:
  • Armadillo - The Saloon
  • Blackwater - Alleyway
  • Chuparosa - The Mayor's Building
  • Escalera - Courtyard
  • Las Hermanas - Courtyard
  • MacFarlane's Ranch - Foreman's Office
  • Thieves' Landing - Warehouse

To instigate a Land Grab match, find the Land Grab Post in one of the above areas and activate it. Matches last 3 minutes.

To earn this trophy, you need to "lay claim" to the land (be the only player standing in the circle) and then kill 8 unique players (so you can't just kill the same person 8 times). This can be difficult, because it's quite hard to find a Free Roam session with 8 players, let alone 8 players willing to play Land Grab. Your best bet is to organise a posse with friends or boosters. To find partners, post here in the Official Red Dead Redemption Boosting Thread.
