- After you've started the game, go to the Options menu and press

for the 'secret' options page. Change controls from 3D to 2D and set the camera to switch. You should also invert running and walking. This way, James will always be running, unless you press
to make him walk. This will make your life so much easier. - After you've beaten the game for the first time return to this 'secret' options menu on your second run and set Bullets to x3. This will triple the amount of bullets you find and it doesn't have any influence on your ranking.
- Opening the menu with

Here is what I consider to be the best and least annoying way to
She Would Be Proud:
First Playthrough: Enjoy the game ...on easy / easy
1st regular ending
Set both combat difficulty and puzzle difficulty to easy and walk through the game. Get (back?) into the combat system, familiarize yourself with the local geography of Silent Hill and begin to memorize the quickest way through the different locations. You will obtain all the story related trophies during this playthrough. Since you are playing on easy you might also get
Hard to Hit and
Keen Eye. DO NOT go for
Melee Master or
Keep Your Distance yet. At the end you'll get to see the Leave, Maria, or the In Water Ending. Save your Clear Data.
Second Playthrough: Enjoy the game ...on normal / normal
2nd regular ending
You could also set the combat difficulty to hard right away to practice for your ten star run but that is up to you. Grab the Chainsaw for
Overkill, then just run through the game, focusing on your second regular ending. You might get some of the trophies which are also related to the 10 star ranking, however, and I'm repeating myself: DO NOT go for
Melee Master or
Keep Your Distance yet.
Picking up the special items White Chrism, The Book of Lost Memories, Obsidian Goblet or The Book of Crimson Ceremony will unlock the corresponding trophies. However, you DON'T want to collect all four of them in one single playthrough just yet, since this would automatically trigger the Rebirth ending. . Save your Clear Data.
Third Playthrough: Already bored? Well, beat it again ...on hard / hard
3rd regular ending
Basically what I wrote above for Second Playthrough. If you don't want to practice for your ten star run yet you could also set combat difficulty to easy and rush through the game. Just make sure you get your third regular ending. Save your Clear Data.
Intermission: Need a break? Good news! Play Maria's Scenario
Born From a Wish Ending
Maria's scenario isn't really that long, it can be beaten in about 20 minutes. This will unlock
Restless Dreams. This ending counts towards your ten star ranking, so don't forget to save your Clear Data.
Fourth Playthrough: sigh ...on hard / extra
Rebirth Ending
Now you really should start practicing four your final run. If you followed my roadmap up to this point you unlocked extra puzzle difficulty. The game doesn't tell you though, you can't select extra difficulty when starting a new game. Just select hard again, it becomes extra automatically (you can check your first save data if you want to make sure). Grab the White Chrism, The Book of Lost Memories, The Obsidian Goblet and The Book of Crimson Ceremony in order to get the Rebirth ending at the end of the game. You are still allowed to save a lot, so do this and practice beating the game on hard. There are more enemies on the streets and in the buildings. You might not want to enter every room and grab every item. You only need 150+ for ten stars, so you don't really have to go out of your way for items. Just try to get a feeling for a good route with enough items so you won't run out of ammo. Highly important: Practice rowing! Rowing that goddamn boat on hard is a pain in the ass. Save your game on the docks and then keep practicing until you are a bit more confident about it.
Fifth Playthrough: Get those 10 stars! ...on hard / extra
Dog and UFO Ending
The good news is: You don't need the UFO ending to obtain 10 stars, so you can get this using the same save file. However, you mustn't forget to use the Blue Gem in the Hospital Yard for this to work. If you haven't gotten
Melee Master and
Keep Your Distance until now this will help you greatly, since it tells you when you are done with the grinding part. Follow this guide and have a look at my video walkthrough to obtain your 10 stars and the dog ending. After this, reload your second save and get your UFO ending. You only have to replay about 20 minutes for this, so this really saves you some time.
Reap the fruit... start a new game and get your well deserved Green Hyper Spray
You have to start yet another game, but no worries, you only have to play it for 10 more minutes. Make your way to the trailer on Saul St. and get inside. Grab the Green Hyper Spray, then lean back and watch
Who Needs a Gun? and
She Would Be Proud pop up on your screen. Feels good, right? Oh, and congratz, you are officially a Silent Hill 2 nerd now.

Say Your Prayers
Unlock the "Rebirth" ending.

Unlock the "Rebirth" ending.
The Rebirth ending is one of the three special endings in Silent Hill 2. It becomes available after you've beaten the game at least once. To achieve this ending, you have to collect four special items which are scattered throughout the game. If you collect all four of them you will trigger this ending, regardless of your other actions. The four items are:
- The White Chrism - In the kitchen in room 105 (Blue Creek Apartment)
- The Book of Lost Memories - Texxacon Gas Station, in a locker near the car with the Steel Pipe
- The Obsidian Goblet - Silent Hill Historic Society in the room with the nearly endless staircase
- The Book of Crimson Ceremony - In the Reading Room of the alternate Lakeview Hotel

It All Makes Sense Now
Unlock the "Dog" ending.

Unlock the "Dog" ending.
The Dog ending is one of the three special endings in Silent Hill 2. It becomes available after you've beaten the game at least two times (one normal ending and the Rebirth ending or the three normal endings are required). To achieve this ending, you have to collect the Dog Key south of Rosewater Park. Have a look at this map by StarFighter76 if you can't find it. Picking up this key will unlock
Man's Best Friend. This key unlocks the door to the Observation Room in the alternate Lakeview Hotel (it's the room next to room 312). Just use the key and the game will end prematurely. This is also the ending of choice for your 10 Star run, since it allows you to skip the last two boss fights while still giving you 10 stars if you fulfilled all the requirements. Keep in mind that this doesn't work with the UFO ending.

Unlock the "UFO" ending.

Unlock the "UFO" ending.
The Dog ending is one of the three special endings in Silent Hill 2. It becomes available after you've beaten the main story and Maria's Scenario at least once. To achieve this ending you have to collect the Blue Gem in the restroom at the very beginning of the game. You need to use this item at three specific locations in the game. After you've used the Blue Gem for the third time the game will end prematurely and the trophy will unlock. The locations are as follows:
- In the courtyard of the alternate hospital, right after defeating Flesh Lips.
- On the docks, after defeating Eddie, before you jump into the row boat.
- In room 312 in the Lakeview Hotel, before you watch the video.

Warp Speed

Complete SH2 in 3 hours or less.
This is one of the requirements for obtaining a 10 star ranking.
This is way easier than it might sound. I think the world record for beating Silent Hill 2 on normal is about 46 minutes.
You don't need to be that fast, just under 3 hours will do. You'll probably get this in one of your first three or four playthroughs without even going for it. However, beating the game on hard with at least 75 melee kills and 75 shooting kills is an entirely different matter. You really have to know your way around Silent Hill to pull this off. If you are lost you can pause the game with
to check one of the maps or a walkthrough. After the hospital you have about 45 - 60 minutes to grind kills in the streets of Silent Hill. If you decided to save before the hospital chase and before the Eddie fight check your save files for your playing time. This is your time frame:

This is perfectly okay, my time was 65 min. Anything above 80 would be really bad news though. - Before fighting Eddie: 130 - 150 min
If you are within this time frame lean back and relax. My time was 138 min I think. 160 would still be possible, anything above would get pretty close towards the end.

Overkill
Acquire the Chainsaw.

Acquire the Chainsaw.
This is one of the requirements for obtaining a 10 star ranking.
The chainsaw will become available after you've beaten the game at least once. You can find it at the beginning of the game, shortly after the cutscene on the graveyard. Continue your way towards Silent Hill and you'll eventually be able to hear the chainsaw. It's stuck in a pile of logs on the right hand side of the path. This is also one of the 8 special items which you need to pick up in order to obtain a ten star ranking, so don't forget to grab it on your final run.

Who Needs a Gun?
Acquire the Green Hyper Spray.

Acquire the Green Hyper Spray.
The Hyper Spray is one of the special items in Silent Hill 2. It comes in 4 different colors. As the trophy description already told you we are going for the Green Hyper Spray. All you have to do to unlock this is to beat Silent Hill 2 with a 10 star ranking. Sounds easy you might think. Well, have a look at the requirements and then think again:
Moreover, you are NOT allowed to use the Chainsaw of the Hyper Spray, as this automatically reduces your rank by one star. As you might have noticed there is a separate trophy for most of those requirements. I decided not to deal with those requirements in this trophy description here in order to keep it as short and to the point as possible. I made all those "see trophy blah blah blah for details" links, so just click on the specific trophy and whooosh! you will find a nice description on how to pull that specific stunt on your 10 star run. This trophy description here is reserved for my 10 star ranking video walkthrough. Yeah, you read right, I recorded the whole goddamn thing. It's in the spoiler box below. I hope you'll find it helpful.
- Beat the game on Action Level Hard
- Beat the game on Puzzle level hard (or extra)
- Get all the possible endings (the UFO ending is not needed for this, if you got Leave, Maria, In Water, Rebirth, Born from a Wish and Dog that's perfectly okay. Your result will read 4/4 (+2)
- Beat the game with two saves or less. See
Playing on the Edge for details. - Beat the game in under three hours. See
Warp Speed and the video guide below for details. - Collect at least 150 items (see

Playing on the Edge
Complete SH2 with 2 saves or less.

Complete SH2 with 2 saves or less.
This is one of the requirements for obtaining a 10 star ranking.
If you are going for
there is no way around this trophy, since beating the game with 2 saves or less is one of the requirements for the 10 star ranking which is needed to unlock the Green Hyper Spray.
It's recommended to save your game for the first time at the end of the alternate hospital before the Pyramid Head chase. This chase is a real pain on hard because it takes only two pokes from Pyramid Head and Maria is dead, and this dumb woman is slow as hell and stops walking if you don't take the corners quickly enough of if you even bump into a wall. Trust me, this is way harder than on the lower difficulty levels and it's a really good idea to save your game before giving it a try.
Most people recommend to make your second save file just before you jump into your own grave to fight Eddie. However, I decided against that, since I always had trouble with Abstract Daddy on my playthroughs on hard. So I decided to save before the Abstract Daddy boss fight. Of course there is a downside to this. If you screw up the rowing part you have to do two boss fights again. However, if you screw up the Abstract Daddy fight and take too much damage you can simply reload your second save without having to re-grind your 150 kills (which is what happened to me
). It's up to you, if you feel confident about the boss fights you can save before or even after the Eddie fight, if you're nervous about screwing it up save at the end of the labyrinth. It doesn't take longer than 5 minutes from Abstract Daddy to Eddie, so it's not that much of a difference.

Keep Your Distance
Defeat at least 75 enemies by shooting in SH2.

Defeat at least 75 enemies by shooting in SH2.
This is one of the requirements for obtaining a 10 star ranking.
Oddly enough it's harder to kill enemies by shooting than by melee attacks in Silent Hill 2, especially if you are playing on hard. Your handgun is more or less useless for killing enemies by shooting, use it for the melee kills instead. Your shotgun is your best friend for this job. Most creatures will go down after one or two hits with your shotty. Now run up to them and shoot them in the crotch area once. If the monster dies it's fine, if it doesn't do not shoot again. The enemies in Silent Hill 2 are invincible while getting up. If you shoot now you won't be able to get away in time and you will get hit. Instead step back, wait for the monster to raise to its full height and then start firing again. Until it goes down again. Your radio will tell you when the enemy is finally dead. James might still look at his enemy or even aim at it, but if your radio dies down you can be sure the thing won't get back up again.
Try not to get this trophy before your 10 star run, because it will help you to figure out when you've reached your 75 kills. If you already got the trophy earlier you'll have to tally your kills which is really kinda annoying.

Melee Master
Defeat at least 75 enemies by fighting in SH2.

Defeat at least 75 enemies by fighting in SH2.
This is one of the requirements for obtaining a 10 star ranking.
What's meant by melee attack is James Sunderland's patented curb stomp. Shoot a creature until it goes down, then run up to it and press
. James will kick it with his mighty boot and the creature will be history. This is far easier than killing the enemies by shooting. However, try not to get this trophy before your 10 star run, because it will help you to figure out when you've reached your 75 kills. If you already got the trophy earlier you'll have to tally your kills which is really kinda annoying.

Find at least 150 items + extra items in SH2.
This trophy descriptions is a bit misleading. You don't need to collect any special items for this trophy to unlock. Simply collect at least 150 items and you'll hear that satisfying *ding* again. I got this trophy halfway through the game, after the hospital on my second visit to Rosewater Park. There are far more than 150 items in this game, so this trophy should come naturally at a certain point. Since this is one of the requirements for a ten star rating as well there is no way around this trophy on your journey to plat. However, to help you out and make your life in Silent Hill a bit easier you can use the awesome maps by StarFighter76 from GameFAQs below. I've arranged them in chronological playing order so you can easily access them while playing. You don't need to get all of the items on those maps, you only need to get 150 for this trophy and for the ten star ranking. There are well over 230 items on those maps, so don't go out of your way for some bullets or a health drink.

Don't Keep Her Waiting
Complete Boat Stage in less than 1 min 20 seconds.

Complete Boat Stage in less than 1 min 20 seconds.
This is one of the requirements for obtaining a 10 star ranking.
All you have to do is to steer your boat in the direction of the bright light and then keep rowing like a boss until you reach the Lakeview Docks. If you didn't invert walking/running in the hidden options menu like I recommended in the Tips and Strategies section you'll need to hold down
to make James row faster. This is kinda tricky if you only have two hands, so if you really didn't invert the controls up to this point do it now.
So, how to row? This is easy on easy and normal, you just have to push the analogue sticks into the right direction and James will do the work. It's a completely different matter on hard and I must say that is is among the most annoying things I've ever been forced to do in a video game. Basically you have to rotate your analogue sticks for James to use the oars. If you want to go straight ahead you have to move the left stick counter-clockwise and the right stick clockwise. If you want to move to the right you have to move both sticks counter-clockwise (much faster than only using the left stick) and if you want to go left you have to move both sticks clockwise (again, much faster than only using one oar).
Now, you need something like this. You could also use your mobile phone or your watch or whatever. You just need a stop watch to be sure if you really made it, especially if you are on your 10 star run after you already got the trophy on an earlier playthrough. Get into the boat, then press
to skip the cut-scene. Start your stopwatch at the same time. Btw, you might want to wait until James sat down before you skip the scene, otherwise you might get some glitch weirdo animation which will only take time. Now put your flat hand on both analogue sticks and rotate them counter-clockwise for about 3-4 seconds to turn the boat into the right direction. I tried a lot of different techniques and this really works like a charm. After those 3-4 seconds start rowing forward. Turn the left stick counter-clockwise and the right stick clockwise. There are different techniques for that. Some people place the controller in their lap and grab the sticks with three fingers, didn't really work for me, I guess you'll have to find a method which works for you yourself. You won't be heading towards the bright light right away, but your boat still got the momentum from your 3-4 seconds hardcore turning work, so it should still be moving towards the light. You don't need to have the light dead center, anyway near it will be okay. Now row like a madman. If you see that you are getting too far off course try to move one stick slower so you'll get back on track. Good luck and don't break your thumbs.

Hard to Hit
Receive less than 500 points of damage in one game, in SH2.

Receive less than 500 points of damage in one game, in SH2.
This is one of the requirements for obtaining a 10 star ranking.
This is a joke on beginner or easy, but it's one of the tougher requirements for your 10 star run on hard. First question is: How much is 500 points of damage? Well, 100 damage is what it takes to get James from perfectly healthy (= green screen in the upper left corner when you press
) do perfectly dead. This really isn't much, since some of the enemies can kill you in one or two hits on hard. The damage you take when Pyramid Head knocks you off the hospital roof doesn't count towards this, so don't worry about that. Just try to count your 'other' red statuses and make sure you have about 100 points of damage in reserve before crossing the lake to the hotel, since there are four picture frame dudes who deal A LOT of damage if they manage to grab you. Btw, you can glitch the first part of the Eddie fight, and I highly recommend doing this. Before the fight starts, equip the steel pipe. During the first cut scene press and hold
and
. Now skip the cut scene and never release
and
. Voilá, first part of the Eddie fight done with zero damage. Check my video walkthrough if you are having difficulties. You can find it in the description for

Childhood Trauma
Defeat Abstract Daddy.

Defeat Abstract Daddy.
This trophy is story related and can't be missed.
Another annoying boss encounter in a narrow room.
It's still possible to beat this boss on hard without getting grabbed more than once or twice. I even managed to beat him without getting hit at all, but you'll need a lot of luck for this. The shotgun is your weapon of choice for this fight. As soon as the cut-scene is over run to the top left corner of the room, turn around and pump two rounds into daddy-o. This should knock him down for a second. Use this time to reach the lower right corner. Turn around and shoot two more times. If you were too slow he will grab you before you are able to pull the trigger the second time. If not, try to squeeze past him on the left side (where Angela is sitting). Head back to the upper left corner and shoot him two more times. Rinse and repeat. Count your shots, is you are out of bullets reload from the menu and start shooting again right after exiting it. You won't be able to see what you are doing, but James will do the aiming for you. On hard it takes 10 hits to kill Abstract Daddy. Good luck.

Defeat Pyramid Head.

Defeat Pyramid Head.
This trophy is story related and can't be missed.
You will encounter two Pyramid Heads at the end of the alternate Lakeview Hotel. This boss fight isn't too hard if you are patient. You can beat those guys without taking a single hit even on hard. Just circle the room from corner to corner and never fire more than two shots max. On hard this will take ages, but eventually both guys will go to the middle of the room to kill themselves. Pffft, aliens, lost face or something. Anyway, you'll be awarded your trophy.

Where's that Letter!?
Defeat Flesh Lips.

Defeat Flesh Lips.
This trophy is story related and can't be missed.
Most likely this is going to be your first trophy in the game. After the first part of the hospital you'll meet that spoiled brat again. Yeah right, the one who kicked away the key you wanted to get in the Blue Creek Apartments. Great. This time she will trick you into entering a room and then she will lock you inside with some weird monsters hanging from the ceiling. Use your shotgun for the first part of the fight. If you get the angle right you can hit both of them at the same time. After you've killed the first dude a third one will appear. When only one of them is left you can switch to your handgun. This will stun him more effectively than the shotgun and save you your precious shotgun ammo. Once the last hanging dude is dead your trophy will unlock.

Defeat Mary.

Defeat Mary.
This trophy is story related and can't be missed.
Like with the two Pyramid Heads patience is key here. Mary will send a swarm of moths after you again and again. Whenever this happens just keep running to avoid being stunned. Once the swarm disappears it's time to shoot Mary once or twice. Don't become too greedy though, as the next swarm is just around the corner. After some time Mary will crash down and it's up to you to deliver the final blow. My recommendation: Use Pyramid's Sword.

Unlock the "Born from a Wish" ending.

Unlock the "Born from a Wish" ending.
All you have to do for this trophy is to beat Maria's Scenario. When you start a new game you will be asked if you want to play the main story or Maria's Scenario. Choose the second option to play as Maria in her short add-on story. This doesn't take more that 20 minutes if you are using a guide like this one by Conqueror. Once you have beaten it you'll obtain your trophy. Don't forget to save your results screen, as this ending counts towards you 10 star ranking.

Complete SH2 on Extra Riddle difficulty.

Complete SH2 on Extra Riddle difficulty.
In order to unlock Extra Riddle difficulty you have to beat the game three times, each time on a different riddle difficulty. Start you first playthrough on easy, your second on normal and your third on hard difficulty. For your fourth playthrough select hard riddle difficulty again. The game will change this to extra automatically. The only way for you to find out if you are really on extra difficulty is to a.) check out your save data or b.) wait for the safe puzzle in the Woodside Apartments building. If you find letters from a to k in this riddle this mean you are playing on extra difficulty. If you are having difficulties with some of the riddles I can recommend this guide by Conqueror.
