[top]Tips & Strategies

  • all trophies are in XMB order
  • learn when to reload: it's not always a good idea to reload while you are 'moving', sometimes it's better to reload while there is only one slow mutant left
  • better with a friend: it's fun to play this game with a friend, invite your best buddy, put some beer into the fridge and have a good time! Co-op also makes things like Classic Mode a breeze.

[top]Roadmap

Here is what I consider to be the best and most enjoyable way to House of the Dead: Overlord:

1st Playthrough: Beat Story Mode
You don't have any options anyway. Beat Story Mode to unlock the Director's Cut and the Director's Cut Challenges. This will net you all the story related trophies. Most likely you will also get Goregasm! and Weak in the Knees, especially if you buy the automatic shotgun as early as possible (this will also unlock Merchant of Menace). Toasty and Yakuza are also easy to obtain. Also try to shoot every collectible you can, but don't rip your hair out if you don't get all of them. The collectibles stack across multiple playthroughs in The House of the Dead and you'll have to beat those levels over and over again on your way to plat anyway.

2nd Playthrough: Beat Director's Cut
Complete your Director's Cut run for Lights, Camera, Headshot!. You could also start working on the challenges. Use the auto shotgun and go for accuracy and Goregasms. Fully upgrade the auto shotgun during this playthrough to obtain Fully Loaded, then start saving your money for the minigun. As collectibles stack across multiple playthroughs you should get your first collectible trophies in this playthrough. Activate Shoot the Shit! mode until you unlock the Profanity options. You don't need a full playthrough for this, for some reason you will get the unlocked screen after 5-7 levels.

3rd Playthrough: Beat Director's Cut on Hardcore Mode
In Hardcore Mode, mutants can only be killed with headshots. If you are having problems with this mode, grind for some money and buy the minigun. It already comes fully upgraded and makes Hardcore Mode a walk in the park. Just keep aiming for the heads and make sure not to overheat your gun. Not only will you be able to walk through the levels with barely a scratch, the minigun is also exellent for collectibles. You should work on the collectibles and on the no deaths challenges in this playthrough. Once you have finished every Director's Cut mission in Hardcore mode you will obtain Extreme Hardcore.

4th Playthrough: Beat Classic Mode without using any continues
You should know the game pretty well by now. Time to go for the next ! After this playhrough you will have Do You Feel Lucky? in the book.

5th step: Let the grinding begin: Clean up via Level select
Finish the challenges for Perfect Victory. The challenges are NOT available in story mode. They are looked and they will remain locked even after . There is no way around it, you have to beat them in Director's Cut mode. With all game modes unlocked and all collectibles found all you have left to do is to buy and to upgrade all the weapons for Be my Valentine, Jill. If you have beaten all the challenges you should already have more than enough money for this. If you don't, grind some more. Oh, and if you haven't done so yet, complete those three minigames once for I'll Try Anything Once

6th step: Ding!

Goregasm!
Achieve a Goregasm

To achieve a Goregasm you have to kill 25 consecutive mutants without missing a shot or getting hit. The revolver drum in the upper left corner of your screen is your combo meter. At the beginning of your combo the drum is empty. Rack up kills to fill it with bullets. You will reach a new combo level with every drum you fill. Once you miss a shot or get hit your combo meter will plummet and you will have to start from zero! Shooting collectibles won't affect your combo streak. Here are the steps towards your Goregasm:
  • 5 consecutive kills Extreme Violence (100 points per kill)
  • 10 consecutive kills Hardcore Violence (200 points per kill)
  • 15 consecutive kills Ultra Violence (300 points per kill)
  • 20 consecutive kills Psychotic (500 points per kill)
  • 25 consecutive kills GOREGASM (1000 points per kill)

If you are having problems achieving a Goregasm save up some money and buy the automatic shotgun for $15,000. Goregasm guaranteed!

[top]
Weak At The Knees
Maintain a Goregasm for 2 minutes

See Goregasm! above on how to achieve a Goregasm. Simply maintain your Goregasm for 120 seconds and this trophy will unlock. Two minutes isn't that long and you will have to achieve much longer Goregasms to complete the challenges.

[top]
De-Generation
Collect 10 LPs

There is a total of 24 records in HotD OVERKILL and they stack across multiple playthroughs. You will have to find all of them on your way to anyway, because you need them for the challenges and for Be my Valentine, Jill. Once you have shot 10 records you'll be awarded this trophy.

Of all the collectibles those records are the easiest to find. However, if you are having problems finding a particular record check the silver CHALLENGES trophy description below for the relevant level. You will find a full list with all collectibles there.

[top]
Decom-Poster Child
Collect 15 posters

There is a total of 36 posters in HotD OVERKILL and they stack across multiple playthroughs. You will have to find all of them on your way to anyway, because you need them for the challenges and for Be my Valentine, Jill. Once you have shot 15 posters you'll be awarded this trophy.

If you are having problems finding a particular record check the silver CHALLENGES trophy description below for the relevant level. You will find a full list with all collectibles there.

[top]
Dis-Figurine Collection
Collect 15 figurines

There is a total of 35 figurines in HotD OVERKILL and they stack across multiple playthroughs. You will have to find all of them on your way to anyway, because you need them for the challenges and for Be my Valentine, Jill. Once you have shot 15 records you'll be awarded this trophy.

Figurines look like Futurama heads without the glass jar. They are not really hard to spot. However, if you are having problems finding a particular figurine check the silver CHALLENGES trophy description below for the relevant level. You will find a full list with all collectibles there.

[top]
Graphic Horror
Collect 17 comic book pages

There is a total of 34 comic book pages in HotD OVERKILL and they stack across multiple playthroughs. You will have to find all of them on your way to anyway, because you need them for the challenges and for Be my Valentine, Jill. Once you have shot half of all the comic book pages you'll be awarded this trophy.

Those comic book pages can be quite elusive. If you are having problems finding a particular page check the silver CHALLENGES trophy description below for the relevant level. You will find a full list with all the collectibles there.

[top]
Boom Headshot!
Decapitate 200 mutants

You will kill thousands and thousands of mutants in The House of the Dead. Aim for the head every now and again and this trophy will come in no time. In hardcore mode headshots are the only way to kill mutants anyway, so if you are going for plat this trophy will come automatically.

[top]
Toasty!
Kill 5 or more mutants with one grenade

You can find grenades throughout the game. You have to shoot them in order to pick them up. (Don't try this at home!) With grenades you can kill mutants from close range to mid-distance. The explosion won't harm you, so you can even through a grenade if there are mutants right in front of you. Throw a grenade when there are 5 mutants or more near you and the trophy will pop.

[top]
Yakuza
Kill 100 mutants 'Gangster Style' (holding gun sideways)

You can easily get this during the first level. Actually, this was the first trophy I unlocked. Just do as the description says and hold your gun sideways and keep killing those mutants until the trophy pops. If you don't know how to hold a gun sideways check out the spoiler box below:

Toggle Spoiler

NOTE: I started the game on my alt accout and tried to get this trophy using a sixaxis controller. It didn't work. I was holding my controller sideways like a boss, killing 140 mutants in this awkward way.... but no trophy.

[top]
Suffer Like G Did
Complete any level with only one health segment remaining

You can get this trophy in any level, I would recommend going for it in Papa's Palace of Pain though, as Jasper is one of the easiest bosses in the game. Just shoot him until he is almost dead, then let him hit you until you have only one health segment left. Finish him off and you will get your trophy.

[top]
Hardcore
Complete any level in Director's Cut without using any continues

This is just as easy as it sounds. Complete Story Mode to unlock the Director's Cut. Start a new game in Director's Cut Mode and beat the first level without using a continue *DING!* Another trophy in the book. Of course you could get this in any level in Director's Cut, but the first level is the easiest imo. You are also allowed to play co-op for this trophy, of course in this case both players have to beat the level without using a continue.

[top]
Merchant of Menace
Buy a new weapon

Before every level you are allowed to visit the gun shop. I would highly recommend making the automatic shotgun your first purchase. Fully upgraded it kills most zombies mutants in one hit and it has a pretty wide spray for its range. Buy your shiny first new weapon, hit SAVE at the bottom of the screen and the trophy will unlock.

[top]
Fully Loaded
Fully upgrade any weapon

Visit the gun shop to upgrade your weapons. Again I would highly recommend making the automatic shotgun your top priority. Reason: It pwns! Once you got everything to 'max' hit SAVE at the bottom of the screen to leave the shop and the trophy will be yours.

[top]
Power of the Mind
Complete any level with the targeting crosshair off

Start a level of your choice, I recommend Papa's Palace of Pain because Jasper is an easy boss and you don't have to hit tiny weak spots like with the Scream Train boss for example. In the next screen (the one where you can select your weapons or visit the gun shop) you'll find a little crosshair icon next to your player profile. Turn of the crosshairs off and then just beat the level to obtain this trophy. You may want to re-calibrate your Move controller before starting though, just to make sure it works properly. If you miss you still will be able to see where your shots hit. Correct your aim accordingly and you shouldn't have too many problems.

[top]
I'll Try Anything Once
Play each minigame through to completion once

Yeah, well... nothing more to add, really. Select mini-games from the main menu and complete them all. Ding! Trophy.

[top]
Lights, Camera, Headshot!
Complete all levels in Director's Cut

You have to complete the Story mode to unlock the Director's Cut. In the Director's Cut the levels are a little bit longer because you'll follow a different path of the rail. There are more mutants and the final boss battle is a bit different. Complete the game in Director's Cut mode and you will be awarded this shiny silver trophy.

[top]
Caesar's Salad
Complete all CHALLENGES for "Papa's Palace of Pain"

Those 9 silver trophies for the challenges are a bit of a pain. While challenges like accuracy, civilians, pick ups or player deaths are relatively easy, you'll need some practice for the goregasm, combo and especially for the high score challenges. The good news is: You don't have to beat all those challenges at once. They stack across multiple playthroughs, so you can tackle them one by one if you want to. Here are some general tips and tricks for the challenges:
Accuracy:
  • This is 90 % for all levels. This shouldn't pose a problem once you bought the automatic shotgun. It has a pretty nice spray which will straighten out minor flaws in your aim. You'll achieve accuracy results of 90 - 100 % with just a little bit of practice.

Civilians:
  • There are 4 civilians in Papa's Palace of Pain (Director's Cut). Every time you encounter a civilian the message 'hold your fire' will flash while you have some seconds to evaluate the situation. It's really easy to save the civilians in the first level, so unless you are playing this game totally wasted (which wouldn't be unusual) you shouldn't have any issues with this challenge.

High Score:
  • You will have to score more than 225000 points in Papa's Palace of Pain (Director's Cut) in order to beat this challenge. Like in all the other levels the high score challenge is the hardest one to master. A long and healty Goregasm is key to success here. Try to reach a Goregasm as soon as possible and get a good kill chain going. Don't go for headshots, they are too risky and not worth the meagre bonus. Ignore collectibles unless you are 100 % sure you won't miss. Good luck

Pick ups:
  • There are 16 collectibles in Papa's Palace of Pain (Director's Cut) Comics: 4 | Figurines: 4 | Records: 3 | Posters: 5. I've compiled a video for you, showing you their locations. It's hidden in the spoiler box below

Toggle Spoiler

Using the PS3 browser? Here is the link to the video: Papa's Palace of Pain Pick Ups

Combo:
  • You need a combo of 50 kills without getting hit or missing a shot in order to beat this challenge.

Goregasm:
  • You have to maintain a Goregasm for at least 60 seconds in Papa's Palace of Pain (Director's Cut) in order to beat this challenge.

Player deaths:
  • This is the same for all the levels. Simply don't die!

Civilians:
  • There are 3 civilians in Naked Terror (Director's Cut). Every time you encounter a civilian the message 'hold your fire' will flash while you have some seconds to evaluate the situation. The survivors in this level are not really hard to rescue, it's even possible to use the shotgun.

High Score:
  • You will have to score more than 135000 points in Naked Terror (Director's Cut) in order to beat this challenge. Like in all the other levels the high score challenge is the hardest one to master. A long and healty Goregasm is key to success here. • immediately after the second civilian you will find a comic book page on a table
    • outside you will find a record on a pick up truck
    • in the store there is a figurine lying on the end of a long shelf (left hand side)

    • past the gas station, you'll have a brief look at a garage - shoot the poster hanging there
    • shortly thereafter you'll come to a little 'park' with two benches - there is a comic book page on the one

Civilians:
  • There are 4 civilians in Ballistic Trauma (Director's Cut). Every time you encounter a civilian the message 'hold your fire' will flash while you have some seconds to evaluate the situation. The third civilian in this level is a bit tricky if you are trying to get the comic book page as well.

High Score:
  • You will have to score more than 350000 points in Ballistic Trauma (Director's Cut) in order to beat this challenge. Like in all the other levels the high score challenge is the hardest one to master. A long and healty Goregasm is key to success here. Try to reach a Goregasm as soon as possible and get a good kill chain going. Don't go for headshots, they are too risky and not worth the meagre bonus. • There is another comic book page on the bed with the third survivor.
    • There is another figurine on the roof, about 20 seconds after the helicopter crashed.

    • Just after the morgue there will be a comic book page on a strecher. This one is pretty tricky to hit.
    • In the same hallway a door will burst open. There is a poster on the opposite wall.

Combo:
  • You need a combo of 100 kills without getting hit or missing a shot in order to beat this challenge.

Complete all CHALLENGES for "Carny"

Civilians:
  • There are 7 civilians in Carny (Director's Cut). Every time you encounter a civilian the message 'hold your fire' will flash while you have some seconds to evaluate the situation. Even if those seven civilians are not too hard to save, the sheer number of civilians leaves a lot of room for mistakes. Unlike other 'collectibles', civilians don't stack, that means you have to save them all in one attempt to beat the challenge. If you've already got it bring the hand cannon. It's really powerful but it doesn't spread like the shotty.

High Score:
  • You will have to score more than 320000 points in Carny (Director's Cut) in order to beat this challenge. Good luck

    • There is a comic book page on the booth with the first civilian.
    • You will find a figurine next to the three fatsos with the barrels.
    • Right after Isaacs complains about the prices you'll see a record in the distance. (You don't have to hit it right away, wait till you are a bit nearer.)
    • You will end up in a dead end. Isaac will shout "Wrong way!" and you'll turn around. There is a figurine to your right.
    • You will enter a passageway underneath the giant boat swing. There is a comic book page hiding in plain sight.
    • Right after the third civilian you will find another record on the right hand side.
    • After the birds you will have mutants crawling out from under two trailers. After the second trailer watch out for a comic book page in a box.
    • After you met the ROOSTERS for the first time you will go through the hole where the Roosters banner used to be. Watch out for another poster.
    • After you climbed on the stage you will see another poster on the opposite site.
    • Another comic book page is waiting for you on the steps of the carrousel.
    • Look out for another figurine at the shooting range. It's on a shelf on the right hand side.
    • Shortly after the Candy Floss booth there will be another poster on a wall to your right.
    • At the end of the ghost train ride you will find a record...
    • ...and another poster only seconds later.
    • There is another figurine next to the pay booth in front of the circus tent. It's hard to miss.

Combo:
  • You need a combo of 100 kills without getting hit or missing a shot in order to beat this challenge.

Goregasm:
  • You have to maintain a Goregasm for at least 120 seconds in Carny (Director's Cut) in order to beat this challenge.

Player deaths:
  • This is the same for all the levels. Simply don't die!

Swamp Monster
Complete all CHALLENGES for "The Fetid Waters"

Those 9 silver trophies for the challenges are a bit of a pain. While challenges like accuracy, civilians, pick ups or player deaths are relatively easy, you'll need some practice for the goregasm, combo and especially for the high score challenges. The good news is: You don't have to beat all those challenges at once. They stack across multiple playthroughs, so you can tackle them one by one if you want to.
Accuracy:
  • This is 90 % for all levels. This shouldn't pose a problem once you bought the automatic shotgun. It has a pretty nice spray which will straighten out minor flaws in your aim. You'll achieve accuracy results of 90 - 100 % with just a little bit of practice.

Civilians:
  • There are 4 civilians in Fetid Waters (Director's Cut). Every time you encounter a civilian the message 'hold your fire' will flash while you have some seconds to evaluate the situation. The civilians in this level are pretty hard to rescue. If you already have bought it bring the hand cannon as secondary weapon. It has great firepower without the spread you'll get with the shotgun.

High Score:
  • You will have to score more than 225000 points in Fetid Waters (Director's Cut) in order to beat this challenge. Good luck

Pick ups:
  • There are 15 collectibles in Fetid Waters (Director's Cut) Comics: 4 | Figurines: 4 | Records: 3 | Posters: 4.
    • Near the beginning of the level there is a record on the right hand side.
    • after you climb out of the water onto this wooden gangplank, there is a comic book page floating in the water.
    • Right after Isaac rants about redneck mutants there is a figurine sitting under a trailer.
    • In the same area there is a poster on one of the trailers.
    • shortly thereafter there is a comic book page on another trailer
    • You will enter on of those trailers, there is a record on the sofa...
    • ...and a figurine on the toilet.
    • After you killed the first wave of mutants to save the second civilian in this level, you will move forward some steps and then turn around: there is a comic book page leaning on a barrel.
    • You will look through the window of a little shack, there is a poster hanging on the opposite wall.
    • When you are on the boat you will notice a group of mutants to your right, having a picknick; there is a figurine in the middle of this group.
    • While you are being introduced to your first exploding puker mutant you can already see another figurine sitting on the ground on the right hand side. There is a good opportunity to shoot it after the 4th exploding n00btant.
    • In the house in the room with the piano: There is a poster on one of those walls; you can shoot while taking care of the civilian
    • Down in the basement there is a comic book page on a shelf....
    • ...and there is a figurine head spinning to your left.

Combo:
  • You need a combo of 90 kills without getting hit or missing a shot in order to beat this challenge.

Goregasm:
  • You have to maintain a Goregasm for at least 90 seconds in Naked Terror (Director's Cut) in order to beat this challenge.

Player deaths:
  • This is the same for all the levels. Simply don't die!

Civilians:

High Score:
  • You will have to score more than 300000 points in Jailhouse Judgement (Director's Cut) in order to beat this challenge. Like in all the other levels the high score challenge is the hardest one to master. A long and healty Goregasm is key to success here. • In the office where the civilian jumps out of the locker: there is a figurine standing on top of this locker
    • There is a poster hanging on a wall in the cafeteria.
    • Still in the cafeteria, there is a comic book page lying on a table.
    • Right after the cafeteria, there is another poster in a prison cell.
    • Outside in the jail yard there is a figurine sitting on a dumpster.
    • Inside again you will find a record in the warden's room.
    • ...and there is another poster in one of the cells.

Lab Rat
Complete all CHALLENGES for "Overkill"

Those 9 silver trophies for the challenges are a bit of a pain. While challenges like accuracy, civilians, pick ups or player deaths are relatively easy for most stages, you'll need some practice for the goregasm, combo and especially for the high score challenges. The good news is: You don't have to beat all those challenges at once. They stack across multiple playthroughs, so you can tackle them one by one if you want to.

Accuracy:
  • This is 90 % for all levels. However, since you are forced to use the mini-gun at the end of this level it's really difficult to keep your accuracy over 90 % till the end of the boss fight. Here is what you want to do:
    • Play through the level using the automatic shotgun. Your accuracy should be 97% or higher at the end of the level or you are gonna have a hard time finishing the stage with 90%+ accuracy.
    • Make sure not to lose a life until you reach the boss. Trust me, you'll need your continues for the boss fight
    • During the first stage of the fight only focus on the pillars. Do NOT shoot Mother at all or you'll screw up your accuracy right away. You'll get hit a couple of times but who cares?
    • When you are outside only shoot when you are sure that you'll hit your target. For example, when she is throwing those barrels at you you might want to decide not to shoot them. Just let them hit you so you won't screw up your accuracy. Same goes for the exploding freaks she poops. You might want to shoot one or two of them, but if you are unsure just let them hit you. If you brought all three credits you should be okay. When she is throwing the huge rock at you however you'll want to pump bullets into it. This will even raise your accuracy a little, since this rock is really hard to miss. Shoot mother when she tries to stomp you or when she is dangling her ugly boobs in your face. Memorize the pattern and you should be okay. Press to check your accuracy from time to time, so you'll see whether your strategy works. Good luck.

Civilians:
  • There are 4 civilians in Overkill (Director's Cut). Every time you encounter a civilian the message 'hold your fire' will flash while you have some seconds to evaluate the situation. The survivors in this level are not really hard to rescue, it's even possible to use the shotgun.

High Score:
  • You will have to score more than 300000 points in Overkill (Director's Cut) in order to beat this challenge. A long and healthy Goregasm is key to success here. Try to reach a Goregasm as soon as possible and get a good kill chain going. Don't go for headshots, they are too risky and not worth the meagre bonus. Ignore collectibles unless you are 100 % sure you won't miss. Good luck

Pick ups:
  • There are 15 collectibles in Overkill (Director's Cut) Comics: 4 | Figurines: 4 | Records: 3 | Posters: 4.
    • Near the beginning of the level, after the camera turned for the first time, there will be a record on the wall.
    • There will be a poster behind two mutants throwing knifes at you. You can hardly miss that one.
    • Shortly after the next civilian there will be a desk with a grenade under it. After you jumped on that desk you will be able to shoot another figurine on a cupboard.
    • You will get into a long hallway. There are cells to the left and to the right. There is a poster in the first cell. You'll only look at it for a second at first, but the rail will come back to it in a couple of seconds.
    • There is a record in another cell, still in the same hallway.
    • You will come into an area with a lot of tools like buzzsaws and stuff. There is a figurine sitting on a shelf.
    • Upstairs you'll find two mutants and a comic book page in a barrel.
    • In the room AFTER the room with the next civilian there will be a figurine sitting on top of a computer monitor.
    • There is another comic book page near the exit of the room with the pool in the middle.
    • There will be a little cutscene with a civilian running away from a bunch of mutants. There is a poster in this room (right hand side).
    • After the hallway with the mutants babies you'll enter the crematorium. There is a poster hanging on the wall.
    • In the hall full of missiles you'll find another record hidden in plain sight.
    • There is another figurine in the ancient server room.
    • In the room with the third survivor you will have the chance to shoot another comic book page.

Combo:
  • You need a combo of 90 kills without getting hit or missing a shot in order to beat this challenge.

Goregasm:
  • You have to maintain a Goregasm for at least 90 seconds in Overkill (Director's Cut) in order to beat this challenge.

Player deaths:
  • This is the same for all the levels. Simply don't die!

Note: You have to watch the whole credits (which can't be skipped) before your trophy will finally unlock.

Never Runs Dry
Complete a level without triggering an enforced reload (i.e. reaching zero bullets)

After you have shot your last bullet your weapon will get reloaded automatically. You don't want this to happen if you are going for this trophy. All you have to do is to reload your weapon manually all the time (use the Move button or give the Move a good shake, use on the Sixaxis controller). Easier said than done though, once you get trigger happy you might run out of bullets without even noticing. However, there is a fool proof method though. Once you have bought the minigun just complete a level with it. You will get the trophy automatically, even if you overheated your gun. Thanks to Dirty_Shirticus for the tip.

Be My Valentine, Jill
Unlock all unlockables and purchase all weapons

This is the easiest of the four trophies, a bit of grinding is involved though. You need to:
  • Unlock every game mode and every weapon.
  • Buy every weapon
  • Upgrade every weapon to max

Here is how you unlock everything:

Story Mode Rewards:
Unlock Director's Cut
Unlock Shoot The Sh*t Mode
Unlock the Minigun in the Gun Shop ($25000)

Director's Cut Mode Rewards:

Unlock Classic Mode
Hardcore Mode
Unlock Dual Wield Mode
Unlock the Crossbow in the gun shop ($25000)

Classic Mode Rewards:
Unlock the Golden Magnum in the gun shop ($50000)

Shoot The Sh*t Mode Rewards:
Keep playing the game in Shoot the Sh*t Mode until the Profanity Options unlock (you don't need to beat the entire game, it will unlock earlier)

After that, your rewards screen will look like that:

Toggle Spoiler

Now the trophy description doesn't say it, but you need to upgrade every weapon to max for this trophy. It unlocked a bit funny for me: After I had finally bought all the upgrades nothing happend at first. The trophy unlocked ten minutes later, when I was loading another level.

Perfect Victory
Achieve an S rank for all levels in Story Mode or Director's Cut

One of the hardest trophies in the game. You'll need a lot of practice for this. The good news is that your rank is solely score dependant. That means you don't have to worry about collectibles or civilians at all while going for S rank. Just barely beating the high score challenge is not enough for an S rank either, you have to beat it by a good measure. Anyway, let me give you some tips:
  • Do this on Story Mode! It's much easier to obtain an S rank in Story Mode. However, it's far from impossible on Director's Cut as well. I actually did this on Directory Cut since I already got a couple of S ranks while going for the challenges. However, all "S" ranks have to be from either Story Mode or Director's Cut, not from a combination of the two. Thanks to dajmer79 for clarifying this.
  • If you are playing on Story Mode, play a normal game, no extra mutants, no hardcore mode.
  • Collectibles are not important, so only shoot them when you are 100% sure you won't miss.
  • You don't need to rescue any survivors for an S rank. Actually it's a good idea to let the mutants kill them, since it would ruin your combo if you accidentally killed them while trying to save them.
  • Your score is the most important thing; you need a long kill chain for an S rank. You are still allowed to make one or two mistakes per stage, just make sure to get into your Goregasm again as quickly as possible.
  • Bring the mini-gun and the automatic shotgun. Use the mini-gun for most of the work. Only shoot short bursts and you'll easily achieve and maintain a Goregasm without having to worry about reloading. You might want to use the shotgun in a couple of situations (especially on Director's Cut) where the mini-gun is just too slow. You know, when the camera is still turning and some f%#ing mutant is already bitch-slapping you before you can even raise your weapon. Memorize these assholes and get your shotty ready in time to save your combo.

Feel free to post your S rank results in the discussion tab. Make sure to include the game mode and all the options you selected. Maybe we can find the underlying system.

Do You Feel Lucky?
Complete all levels in Classic Mode without using any continues

In classic mode you only have one weapon: A semi-upgraded Magnum. So this trophy can be a pain... if you are alone. It's a walk in the park in coop, so just invite your best buddy and run through the game. Of course it is also possible to beat this mode alone too. The boss fights are tricky though, you have very limited firepower and you need to aim really carefully. If you have two Move controllers you can still have double fire power even if there is no co-op buddy around. Dual Wield is disabled in Classic Mode, but you can still start a game with two people and control the second Move controller with your weak hand.

[top]
Extreme Hardcore
Complete all Director's Cut levels in Hardcore Mode

In Hardcore Mode, mutants can only be killed with headshots. If you are having problems with this mode, grind for some money and buy the minigun (you unlock it by beating the Director's Cut). It already comes fully upgraded and makes Hardcore Mode a walk in the park. Just aim for the heads and make sure not to overheat your gun. Not only will you be able to walk through the levels with barely a scratch, the minigun is also exellent for collectibles and money.
