[top]Tips and Strategies

  • All trophies are in XMB order
  • The DLC takes place about 10 years after the event in the original game
  • All of the side weapons are the same as the regular game with the exception of the Blunderbuss which is a shotgun instead of dual pistols.
  • You can still engage in naval battles, but you won't be able to capture ships for a fleet.
  • Freeing Slaves will unlock bonuses for Ade. Once you have unlocked them, you will need to purchase them at the market.
  • There are Harpooning opportunities in the Caribbean, but you won't need to craft anything so they are a waste of time.

Naval Tips and Strategies
  • Experto Crede Controls:
    • The left stick will turn the Experto Crede and the right stick will control the camera, exactly the same as the game.
    • Use the to increase your speed by opening more sails.
    • Use the to decrease your speed by closing your sails
    • Use the to order your crew to brace for impact. This is useful for avoiding enemy vessel cannon fire and for taking cover from giant waves.
    • Use the to fire the deck mounted Swivel Guns once you have revealed the weakpoints on enemy ships. Hold down the button until the aiming reticule is on the desired ship target and turns red then release to fire a precision attack.
    • Hold down the to target your ship's cannons when you are looking at either side of the ship. You can adjust the arc of the shot by moving the targeting path up and down. Hold the button down until you have some ships crossing your path, then press the to fire your Round Shot
    • Hold down the to target your ship's front cannons when you are looking at the front of the ship. You can adjust the arc of the shot by moving the targeting path up and down. Hold the button down until you have some ships crossing your path, then press the to fire your Chain Shot
    • Press the to fire your Heavy Shot from either side of your ship. You can;t adjust the targeting for this and it is only for close combat, but is very lethal.
    • Press the to fire your Fire Barrels when looking behind the ship. Once these are in the water, hold the to target them and release to shoot them to damage nearby ships.

  • The Experto Crede will turn tighter at Half Mast or even at a Full Stop than it will when you are at Full Mast. Remembering this can be especially helpful in avoiding running aground or if you need to turn tight in battle.
  • When you pull along side an enemy ship with cannons, there will be a highlighted red area on the water showing their line of fire before their cannons start blasting. If your ship passes through that line hold the to take cover.
  • If you are in rough waters, there will most likely be Rogue Waves. These are represented by an white wave with an arrow on your mini map, and can cause good damage to your ship if they hit you and you will lose some crew members. Steer the ship into the wave and take it head on to avoid damage.
  • Rogue Winds are very strong and can easily blow you into the rocks in narrow passages. Switch to Half Mast when you get hit with these to correct your course.
  • Holding down the cannon fire button will concentrate your fire to a more specific area. Try holding the button down until an enemy vessel is in range to maximize the damage.
  • Enemy Vessel Overview:
    • Gunboat: These are the smallest of the enemy vessels. They have two sails and deck guns. These aren't worth wasting money spent on cannonballs, I recommend just avoiding them.
    • Schooner: These are just a touch bigger than the Gunboats. They like to drop Fire Barrels all over the place to try and trap you. These can be taken out with a single shot of your Mortars.
    • Brig: This is the medium sized ships. They try and ram you, that's there thing. They can be taken out fairly easily with Heavy Shot.
    • Frigate: These are the smaller of the two larger enemy vessels. They have cannons and deck guns and can fire more rapidly than you can.
    • Man of War: These are the larger of the two larger enemy vessels. They can cause massive damage with a very large arsenal of guns. Use Heavy Shot and your Swivel Cannons on their weakpoints to take them down quickly.

Liberation Day
Free your first slave

This is a story Based trophy.

After you have finished the opening sequence of the game and watch the intro and title for the DLC, you will hear a woman screaming. She will run be and get into a small fight with her Overseer as she runs off again. Once you gain control of Adewale, you will need to chase him down and kill the Overseer before he recaptures the fleeing slave. Complete this and after the cutscene the first trophy of the DLC will unlock.

[top]
Seeds of Independence
Liberate 500 slaves.

You can start working on Liberating Slaves as soon as you gain control of Adewale in Port Au Prince. At the very beginning of the game, you will only be freeing slaves, but as the game progresses you will also be liberating Resistance Fighters as well that will help you in battle. 500 sounds like a daunting number, but it really isn't and you should have no problem reaching this number. The good part about this trophy is that freeing slaves and Resistance Fighters also offers upgrades for the gameplay so it does pay to work on this during the normal gameplay of the game. The picture below will show you a list of all the Slave freeing options, the icon you will see on your map for each activity and the number of maximum slaves that each activity has the ability to free and below that I have given a brief description of each activity. As soon as you reach 500 Slaves freed the trophy will unlock.

  • Escape: This will be a runaway slave with an Overseer chasing him. Simply catch up to the Overseer and kill him to free the slave
  • Punishment: This entails a couple guards torturing a couple slaves by various means with a Captain overseeing them not far away. The Captains like to sit back and shoot at you before entering battle.
  • Convoy: Convoys always consist of an Overseer and a couple of smaller guards escorting some slaves down the street. Be prepared for this battle as more guards always join in against you when the battle starts.
  • Jail: The jails have a couple of guards roaming around the area and one will have the key. You won't need to use your Eagle Vision to identify him, as soon as the activity pops up the one with the key will have a key icon appear over his head. Kill him or pickpocket the key then use it to open the jail.
  • Auction: These are slaves being sold to the highest bidder. There are two ways to handle this, you can either go in like a badass and take down all the guards OR you can pay the auctioneer 500 Reales to give them to you to free them.
  • Injury: This will have an injured slave that you must carry to the marked destination where he will be safe. You will get attacked by guards on the way and will have to put him down and defend him, then carry him again.
  • Plantations: Plantations will be different for Night and Day. During the day, you will need to take down 20 Overseers in the area to liberate the Plantation. The Overseers are every enemy on the Plantation. At night, you will need to find the one guard that has the key, which is near the main house of the Plantation, and liberate him of the key Then you will need to go to each slave house marked on your map and open the door. Either by day or night, make sure you use stealth when doing this as the more enemies that are alerted the more slaves can be killed during the Plantation liberation. Once a Plantation is liberated, it won't be available again until a new slave owner takes over the plantation again.
  • Slave Ship: Very easy, simply take out the escort ships for the Slave Ship, you won't need to fire on the Slave Ship at all, then board the Slave Ship and take out the set number of guards to liberate the slaves on board.

Firepower
Kill 5 guards at once with a blunderbuss.

You will receive the Blunderbuss after you have completed Memory 3. The Blunderbuss is basically a high powered shotgun allowing you to take out several enemies at once within the blast area. There are several Blunderbusses in the game and each has its own characteristics that vary between Power, Range and Spread. This trophy sounds like a pain, BUT is actually quite easy and you can get this right after you receive the default Blunderbuss in the game. Once you receive the weapon and are in free roam, head to the Restricted Area that you can see in the picture below.

Once there, get all the guards to come after you, and lead them all to the bridge in the next picture below. For some reason the knobby guards will crowd in to get over the small bridge leaving them open to get blasted with your Blunderbuss. There are plenty of guards here so as longa s you get them all funneling onto the bridge you shouldn't have a problem hitting 5 of them.

IF you are having problems getting the trophy using this method, wait until later in the game when you receive the Firecrackers. Find a nice spot with several guards and toss out some Firecrackers and the guards will all come to investigate. Once they are close, take them out with the Blunderbuss.

His Own Medicine
Disarm the Gouverneur and kill him with the branding iron.

You will encounter Governor de Fayete in the final Memory of the DLC. This trophy goes along with the final objective of the game, so you will get this little bonus while working towards your 100% Completion trophy. De Fayet is actually carrying the branding iron when he flees so you won't need to look for it. Once you finally catch up to him, change to unarmed by pressing , then perform a Counter - Disarm when he attacks you by pressing , to take the branding iron away from him and have it as your main weapon. Now he will pull out a sword to attack with. I have found that de Fayet is quite good at countering your counter attacks, so I recommend using a Counter - Throw by pressing , to throw him down, then stab him with the branding iron while he's on the ground to kill him and the trophy will unlock. Make sure you don't use him as a Human Shield in the middle of your attack as that won't count for the trophy.

His Full Attention
Freedom Cry - Achieve 100% synchronization

For this trophy you basically have to finish all the main story mission in the DLC....at 100% synchonization and collect everything. You can replay the main story missions towards this by pressing the button and heading to the Progress Tracker tab. Once you hit full Synchronization, the trophy will unlock.
  • Complete all Main Sequence Memories to 100% Sync
    • This consists of completing all the DLC mission's optional objectives in the game.

  • Memory #1 - The Calm Before the Storm
    • Optional Objectives:
      • Locate the Templar Admiral's Ship using the SPYGLASS: As soon as you have control of Adewale, press and hold the to activate your Spyglass and look at the group of ships on the left side. The largest ship is the Admiral's Ship.
      • Use the Mortar to surprise the Templar Fleet: After using your spyglass, press and hold the to use your Mortar Spyglass then move the targeting highlighter on to one of the ships so that it turns red. Now press the to fire your Mortar to surprise them.

  • Memory #2 - A Common Enemy
    • Optional Objectives:
      • None: Simply Complete the Mission

  • Memory #3 - Laying the First Brick
    • Optional Objectives:
      • Push an overseer into the water: This is easiest if you do this after the air assassination objective. After you complete the air assassination, there will be another Overseer in the same area. Let this Overseer see you, and back up to the edge of the dock. Wait for him to attack then use a Counter - Throw by pressing : to throw him into the water to complete this objective.
      • Perform an air assassination from a height of 10 meters: Take out the group of enemies in the first area, then look for a the top of a lift structure on the right side that you can climb up on top of and you will have a nice view of the area below. Directly below you is an Overseer that you can air assassinate to complete this objective.

  • Memory #4 - A Ship of His Own
    • Optional Objectives:
      • Use Bastienne's girls to distract the guards: As you are heading towards the docks, you will need to use one of the many powder kegs lying around to light the watchtower on fire to pull all the guards off the ship. Before doing that, on the left and right side of the area with the watchtower, there are Dancers for hire. I recommend hitting the watchtower guard with a Sleep Dart first as he is a real nuisance, then hire one of the groups. There is a small band of enemies just to the right of the watchtower standing on a podium that you can have the Dancers distract by pressing the when the enemies are distracted. As soon as the Dancers lure the enemies away the objective will be complete.
      • Distract 4 guards with firecrackers: You will receive Firecrackers at the beginning of this Memory and they will even start out equipped for you. This objective is quit simple, just find a couple guards and press the to toss the Firecrackers out and when they explode the guards will come to investigate. This is a cumulative objective so you don't have to distract 4 guards at the same time with one set of Fireworks.

  • Memory #5 - Lifting the Veil
    • Optional Objectives:
      • Kill the Overseer who led the slaves: The Overseer can be found at the bottom of the first hill right inside the gates to enter the mansion grounds. You can use your Eagle Vision by clicking the tho highlight him in gold. Hide in the bushes near him and wait for him to finish his conversation, then he will split away from the other Overseer making him open for attack.
      • Liberate slaves form the Slave barracks: This will appear after the eavesdropping is complete and your objective changes to "Return to Bastienne". For this you need to sneak back up to where you started at the slave barracks and take out the Overseers that are beating the slaves. If you are seen on the way up there, the slaves will be killed so you must be sneaky until you get a clear run at the torturer. Once you take out the guards around the slaves, they will run off and the objective will be complete

  • Memory #6 - A Scientific Inquiry
    • Optional Objectives:
      • Complete all 5 Investigations: This will appear after your initial eavesdrop in To continue with the main story mission you will only need to complete 3 of these investigations. To complete this objective you will need to complete all 5 of the investigations that will be marked on your map below before heading back to talk to Bastienne. You can go in any order on these, this just happens to be the order i completed them in. Once you have finished all 5 return to Bastienne to complete the investigation and end the mission.
        1. The first investigation I did was the one on the boat. Approach the boat and you will see a Thief pickpocket the Captain and you will get a prompt to chase him. Tackling him does nothing for you, so just chase him from a distance and eventually he will pass some guards that chase him. Continue the chase until he falls down at the top of a hill and the guards start to beat him. Hide in the nearby bushes until they kill him for you and leave the area then loot his body to complete the first investigation.
        2. The second investigation I completed was up on the upper left all by itself. For this mission you will need to perform a pickpocket on a moving Captain. Try to complete this before he reaches a torture area, otherwise several other guides will get notified.
        3. For the third investigation, had all the way down to the water to find a fish merchant. now this one is tricky because facing him is an Overseer that will immediately come after you if he sees you. I recommend hitting him with a Sleep Dart before talking to the merchant. Now you will need to pickpocket a key from the jailer up on the upper left of the area. When you get to this area, he will roam back and forth between a small market and the jail. Wait for him to move back over to the market and he will stop for an easy pickpocket. Doing this will most likely cause ALL the guards in that area to come after you. Use your Smoke Bombs to get away and wait for everything to calm back down. Now you need to return to the Jail area. Directly south of the jail is a house with a Gunner on top that I recommend taking down with a Sleep Dart before moving on the jail as he is a huge pain in the ass. Also behind that same house is a small path that will lead you right into the jail area where the two guards can't see allowing you to open the Jail door and release the slave. Now escape the guards who are now after you again and return to the merchant to finish this.
        4. The fourth investigation is on the far right of the area and is a simple chase and tackle, by far the easiest of this set.
        5. The final investigation is located right in the middle of the village and is an eavesdropping activity. Stand at the highlighted area at the corner of the fence to start the eavesdrop. When the two scientists move, stay behind the fence and follow them over to edge of the fence. When they start walking again, climb up the fence and climb up on to the roof of the house. Follow them and when they stop, jump from the roof of the house over to the large tree and hang out in the "V" of the tree. Once they continue, use the branch to reach the next house and stay above them as they turn left and head down the next road. When they reach the intersection, drop off to the lower part of the roof, then jump down and blend with the bystanders in the crowd on the right side of the road. Continue following them to the next shack they go to and hide in the bushes to finish the eavesdrop.
      • Do not kill anyone while investigating: This is quite possibly the most irritating optional objective up to this point. After the initial eavesdrop that sets up the 5 investigations, you will need to complete the rest of the investigations WITHOUT killing anyone. This doesn't just include the requirement area either, this means you can't kill anyone AT ALL, including freeing slaves in the free roam as you are heading to each investigation area. I recommend stocking up on a lot of Sleep Darts and Smoke Bombs while working on this as it is a pain. If you happen to kill someone, simply reload the checkpoint which mercifully saves after you complete investigation is complete. If you need help check the objective above for tips.

  • Memory #7 - Plant the Seeds
    • Optional Objectives:
      • Sink the Pirate Schooners before sinking the Brig: There are a total of 7 Pirate Ships that you need to take down in this part of the Memory. 6 of them will be Schooners and one will be a Brig. The first 4 Schooners will break off 2 at a time to try and slow you down making this a bit easier. Use your Mortars on them to take them down before they even get close to you. You should be able to take down a Schooner with a single round from your Mortar without even having any upgrades on your ship, depending on your aim obviously. Once you get to the final 3 ships, use your Spyglass to spot the Brig, it should be the one in back as the Schooners are faster, and take them out first, then focus on the Brig. It's ok if you shoot the Brig while attacking the Schooners, just make sure you don't incapacitate the Brig before taking out the last 2 Schooners.
      • Destroy the Pirate Floatilla in 6 minutes: This is really easy if you are a true Pirate Captain . Use the Mortars to take down the Schooners quickly, then get in close on the Brig and use your Heavy Fire and Swivel Guns to quickly take down the Brig. The only thing that can make this a little challenge is the massive storm you get stuck in when taking down the Brig. if you are having trouble, fully upgrade your ship's firepower first, then replay the mission and it should be even easier.

  • Memory #8 - Down with the Ship
    • Optional Objectives:
      • Take less than 50% damage during the naval fight: This is probably the hardest of all the objectives in the game. For this you will need to sink the 3 Frigates before they take down half of your health. I recommend waiting until you have fully upgraded the Hull, your heavy and round shot and your cannons after you complete the main story, then replay this chapter. Once you have those upgraded this should be very simple with a nice barrage of Heavy Shot on the Frigates and your Swivel Cannons on their weakspots.
      • Liberate 15 slaves: After you have defeated the Ships that are attacking the Slave Ship, Ade will go inside the slve ship to free the slaves before the ship sinks. You will need to go to each flashing beam by the Slave beds and perform the QTE prompts to free the slaves. There are a total of 3 sets in the first area, and a total of 4 sets in the second area that you can be freed. You only need to set 4 of the sets free to achieve this goal.

  • Memory #9 - De Fayet's Last Stand
    • Optional Objectives:
      • Kill de Fayet with the branding iron: De Fayet is actually carrying the branding iron when he flees so you won't need to look for it. Once you finally catch up to him, change to unarmed by pressing , then perform a Counter - Disarm when he attacks you by pressing , to take the branding iron away from him and have it as your main weapon. Now he will pull out a sword to attack with. I have found that de Fayet is quite good at countering your counter attacks, so I recommend using a Counter - Throw by pressing , to throw him down, then stab him with the branding iron while he's on the ground to complete this.
      • Kill 5 guards with the Blunderbuss: You will obviously need to do this before killing de Fayet. This is a cumulative objective so you won't need to take out all 5 guards at the same time. You can start by taking out 3-4 of them at the front gate, then quickly press the to reload your Blunderbuss. As soon as it's reloaded, take out a couple more then start your chase on de Fayet.

These are not required to complete all the trophies in the game, BUT if you feel like collecting everything here is a walkthrough of all the treasures you can find in the Caribbean

Port-Au-Prince

This is the only village in the DLC and is large enough to support 3 Plantations. You will also find a large Maroon presence here and will be able to buy supplies for yourself and for the Experto Crede. Port-Au-Prince has a total of 4 Viewpoints to synchronize that will open up the entire map of the village and will let you see all 30 Treasure Chests you will need to collect to complete this area.

Maroon Hideout

The Maroon Hideout will become available after you complete Memory 3 of the main Story. This is where the Experto Crede will be waiting for you if you fast travel to Port-Au-Prince and has both a Maroon Merchant and a Harbormaster. This is basically your home base. There is 1 chest and 1 secret item to find that are both hidden out on the beach near the Experto Crede in this area.

Fort Lully

Fort Lully, is located north of Wellington and to the left of the Maroon Hideout. This Fort is an Island with a beach on each side and contains 3 Treasure Chests

    Toggle Spoiler

Shipwreck

This is the only Shipwreck in the area and mercifully the Experto Crede is already equipped with a Diving Bell so you won't need to go looking for it. There are a total of 4 Treasure Chests in this shipwreck and one Secret Item. When you start the underwater sequence you will only be able to see 3 of the chests, but after you swim through the tunnel to the back area, the final chest and the secret item will appear on your mini map. Also, there is only one shark in the area making this very quick compared to some of the Shipwrecks in the main game.

Martock Island

Martock Island, is located to the left and a little North of the Shipwreck. It is a tiny island with a small beach with a single Treasure Chest on it.
  • Treasure Chest #1: This can be found on the left side of the beach.

Cumberland Bay

Cumberland Bay, is located North of Martock Island and is one of the larger areas of this DLC. There are 3 Treasure Chests and one Secret Item hidden on this island and you will need to get close to each of them for them to appear on your map. Also this is a Restricted Area so have fun taking out the guards while collecting.
  • Treasure Chest #1: This first chest is located in the interior of the island in the small enemy camp right next to the Blunderbuss upgrade.

    Toggle Spoiler

  • Precision Shooter: This is located in a table right next to Chest #1 in the small enemy camp in the interior of the island

    Toggle Spoiler

  • Treasure Chest #2: This is located near the southern wall of the interior of the island. There is a small path that leads behind some trees where you can find this.

    Toggle Spoiler

  • Treasure Chest #3: This final chest is located on the left side of the area, near a couple guards at a camp site.

    Toggle Spoiler

Montez

Montez is the Plantation that sits to the right of Cumberland Bay. I recommend liberating the Plantation first, then going after the extras in the area so there aren't any pesky guards to annoy you. There is one Viewpoint to synchronize here and that will open up the area to show you the exact locations of all 5 of the Treasure Chests in the area.

Fort Matias

Fort Matias is located in the Northern part of the Caribbean and is home to 3 Treasure Chests and one Secret Item
  • Treasure Chests #1 & #2: Dock your ship and head up the pier near the destroyed wall of the Fort to find the two chests right next to each other.

    Toggle Spoiler

  • Mayan Machete: Continue along the beach to the right and around the corner to find the strongest Machete in the game

    Toggle Spoiler

Isla Faro

Isla Faro is located to the right of Fort Matias and has one lonely chest on it.
  • Treasure Chest #1: This can be found right in the middle of the beach

    Toggle Spoiler

Isle-du-Fey

Isle-du-Fey is located south of Isla Faro and much like the other Islands only has one chest on it
  • Treasure Chest #1: This can be found right in the middle of the beach

    Toggle Spoiler

Tortuga

Tortuga is the Plantation that sits to the North of Port-au-Prince. I recommend liberating the Plantation first, then going after the extras in the area so there aren't any pesky guards to annoy you. There is one Viewpoint to synchronize here and that will open up the area to show you the exact locations of all 5 of the Treasure Chests in the area.
