TIP - You do NOT have to collect all the boatman coins.

Take your time with your combos. You don't want to be just hitting buttons because you may not be able to stop the combo and end up getting hit.

Playthrough One:
I would recommend just starting the game on Deathinitive mode. This mode isn't completely difficult but you won't have any upgraded weapons or skills if you do it this way. During this run though, you will get all the story related trophies . If you make sure you select NOT TO CONTINUE to NG+, you can go back through any level and get all the collectibles and side quests as well. If you happen to accidentally hit NG+ you will need to recollect ALL collectibles and redo ALL side quests. Collect the collectibles as you go through each level to make your clean up a bit easier. I would also recommended doing the Arbiter's Maze during this run as well.

Story related you will obtain:
Crow Carrion A True Horseman By Your Command The Court of Bones
Dust to Dust Pathfinder Fire of the Mountain City of the Dead
Clipped Wings The Spectral Touch Tears of the Mountain The Root of Corruption
It's Not Over I Can Has Cake? To Move a Mountain The Rod of Arafel
Soul Crushing Tearing Time A New One Heart of the Mountain Stans of Heresy
The Big Boss Looks Familiar Tree of Life The Mad Queen
A Stroll In The Demonic Park Grim Reaping The Lord of Bones Lord of the Black Stone
Four My Brother Death Will Tear Us Apart The Toll of Kings It's Definitive

Collectibles you will want to aim for:
Abracadabra Gnomad
Antiquing All You Can Eat Buffet

Side Quest you want to aim for:
The Secondary Adventure Like a Noss

Miscellaneous Trophies you want to obtain:
Respec Yourself Mass Ruckus I've Brought You A Gift Full Potential
Diamond Geezertron The Triple Lindy Feeding Time

Playthrough Two:

Now start your game on easy with NG+. The only things that do carry over are your stats, weapons and skills. This run is basically just to get you to level 30 being you can only get to level 22 in the first playthrough. when you have reached 30, you don't need to continue the story anymore unless you are working on the collectible trophies that you didn't do during the first playthrough.

Clean Up:

This is basically just for the crucible. I would save it for last so that you are all leveled up and have some strong weapons on you.

Unlock Everything

Crow Carrion
Defeat the Crowfather

This is will be the first boss you will fight very early on in the game. It isn't hard at all, as long as you evade attacks. You start the scene talking to the Crowfather, and shortly after War comes out. This is where the fighting starts.

Focus lock onto War with and when he swings his sword, hit to evade. After he swings, start to hit him back a few times before evading his attacks. About half way through the fight, you will lock swords. When this happens, hit repeatedly until the cut scene stops, and hopefully you come out on the winning end.

At the end, the Crowfather will be laying on the ground. Walk over to him and hit to kill him.

(even on Deathinitive mode, this fight is not hard at all)

Dust to Dust
Defeat the Guardian

In order to start the Guardian fight, you will first need to find the three heart stones to place back into the Guardian. The first two stones you find, you will need to navigate around and figure out how to get to them to knock them down. It's all pretty straight forward though if you take your time to look around the area for wall climbs and such. Once you knock them down, Karn will pick them up and you will need to travel back to the center area. The third stone is pretty straight forward, there is hardly any looking and navigating. Once you have knocked it down and Karn picks it up, you will start to head out but not before the stone corrupts the Custodian you brought inside with you. You will need to fight this Custodian to continue.

Tips for Custodian fight:
  • Use your combo's. Try to not do the long combos so that you have time to evade his attacks.
  • The Custodian has two attacks. The first one he will clap his hands right in front of him, which can easily be evaded by hitting and a direction with the analog. His second attack is a spinning attack. This attack can be a bit harder to evade, but try as it does a lot of damage. When you see him about to start spinning, back away quickly to stay clear of it.
  • To get to him fast, use your Deathgrip to pull yourself right to his face.
When you defeat the Custodian, head back to the middle area where the last stone will be placed in the Guardian. A cutscene will activate and when it is over you will need to go and find him. Travel to the Tri-stone and enter the big open field where you will find the Guardian.

Guardian Fight
There are two phases to this fight. It's not entirely hard, but can be some what challenging, especially on the higher difficulties.
For both phases, watch out when getting to close to his legs. He will stomp down and cause you damage as well as knocking you off Despair,

Phase I:
One the Guardians left arm, you will see some yellow bombs. Wait for the Guardian to attack by slamming his weapon down. While riding Despair, shoot the bombs with your Redemption. His arm will fall apart, exposing the Heart Stone. Go over to the heart stone quickly and use the Deathgrip to get up to the stone. Hit it three times before you fall down and have to redo the process. The second time you do this, you will destroy the stone. This will disable his right arm.

Phase II:
This a bit more time consuming then the previous phase. This time, the Guardian will shoot out big, yellow, spiked covered orbs. The giant orbs roll around on the ground and come after you. Ride Despair to avoid the orbs while you are shooting it. You will want to shoot it a few times with your Redemption until it is ALMOST destroyed. You will know when it's time to stop shooting because the orb will stop rolling and hover above the ground. At this point you want to ride Despair between the Guardians legs to make the Orb hit the Guardian. You will want to be fast about this because if you are to slow, the orb will miss the Guardian while trying to hit you. When the orb hits the Guardian, it will bring the Guardian down, but not for a long time. Ride over to the lower arm and use your wall run to run up the arm. Jump off of the two pegs to the wooden beam and jump and hit to use the Deathgrip to reach the stone. Attack it a few times before you fall off. Do the same process again, but be fast with the orbs because he will occasionally shoot more then one out.

Clipped Wings
Defeat Archon

This is the boss you will fight when you get to the end of Stains of Heresy. The rod you just put together on earth now lies in the hands of Archon. Archons attacks are powerful and will do a lot of damage if they connect with you. He performs several different attacks, so pay attention and evade when you can.

Phase 1:
Archon will take flight quite often. When he is in the air, he will have a protective shield up to prevent you from hitting him, so you will need to just dodge his attacks and wait for him to lower his shield. When he does, he now gathering energy. At this time, use the Deathgrip to Archon, where you can unleash some combos on him. Be careful to not do to long of a one so that you have time to get away when he comes crashing down. When Archon finally comes crashing down, he will send out a powerful shock wave. Leap and dodge this shock wave. If you need to stay in the air for a bit, perform some mid air combat moves to postpone you hitting the ground. After you have hit him in the air a few times, he will be stunned. This is the perfect time to go in close for some strong hits. Soon it will prompt you to hit in which you will cut Archon's wings off.

Phase 2:
Once Archon is forced to stay on the ground, avoid his powerful attacks, while trying to get in close enough to attack him yourself. When you see the Archon start to block, this is your clue to hurry and dodge backwards before Archon hits you. When Archon is close to dying, he will grow Corruption wings and take to the sky one last time. Dodge his sky charges and use the Deathgrip to close in on him. Again, when he starts to block, dodge out of his way before he attacks you and dodge again when he charges at you. Keep doing this technique until he is finished off.

It's Not Over
Defeat Samael

Samael is the boss you will find at the end of the Black Stone. He is very strong and powerful.

Phase 1:
The bridge linking the two platforms together will go away, and Samael will come over to the platform you are on. He teleports quite frequently, so trying to use your Deathgrip will be almost impossible. Keep locked on him though, and keep evading his attacks. When he slams down on the ground, he will pause for a moment, and this will be your chance to go and get some hits in. When you see him raising his leg though, back up to avoid the shock wave. After you have damaged him a bit, he will teleport to his throne and send 3 fire balls at you. They can be easily evaded though. He will come back over now, so again, proceed to evade his attacks until he slams down. After a few more hits. he will again teleport to his throne, but now he will send 5 fire balls at you. Avoid them again and repeat the process. After a few more hits, he will head to his throne and the bridge will reappear. Head across the bridge and hit him. A small cutscene will activate and a small QTE. Press when told to and then run back to your platform. He will drag the two platforms together, thus starting phase two.

Phase 2:
Samael's attacks are alot stronger now. Evade his attacks and again wait for him to slam down. This is one of the only times you can hit him without taking damage. Samael now has electric running through him, so if you hit him or get hit by him, you will constantly take damage for a bit. When he slams down however, the electric isn't there, so you can hit him a few times. Again, when he lifts his leg, back up. Now instead of the fire balls, Samael will send out little portals on the ground the follow you around. Avoid them by timing you evading right. When they are done, wait for Samael to again slam down and repeat the process. The next time Samael sends out the spots, they will be all over the ground and moving. Watch your step and be sure to not get caught in one. When they stop, again, proceed to repeat the process. Use reaper form if available to do extra damage to him without taking damage yourself.

Once he is defeated, you will have completed the Black Stone.

Soul Crushing
Defeat The Wailing Host

This will be the final boss you fight at the end of The City of the Dead. He isn't too difficult once you get his pattern down.

Phase 1:
The Wailing Host likes to attack by slamming his arms down with his fist then swinging his arms back and forth. Dodge the fist and watch for the arms. The first swipe with the arms will hit you if you are to close, as the next swipe will hit you if you are to far. So when he swipes the first time, dodge backwards then quickly dodge forward before he swipes them again. When you are in close enough, take some hits on the giants face. Occasionally, the Wailing host will throw his arms down around his head. Back up and when his arms are folded on the ground, go get some hits in. Eventually, after enough hits, he will lay his head down, this is the time to go in and do some heavy damage. The second time his head falls, watch for to appear and hit it to remove the face mask.

Phase 2:
Periodically, the Wailing Host will vanish, sending out some ghostly skeletons. This is a good time to refill your wrath and health a bit. Once all the skeletons are gone, the Wailing Host will make his appearance again. When he reappears, use the same strategies as you did during Phase I except this time he will slam his fist down. Occasionally, portals will appear on the ground under you, evade them to evade damage. This time around though, ghostly skeletons will appear while the Wailing Host is out. You will need to focus on hitting the Host as well as evading and hitting the ghostly skeletons. Soon the Wailing Host will collapse, in which you will need to again, wait for to appear and hit it to finish the Wailing Host off.

The Big Boss
Defeat Absalom

This is your final boss. He is by far, one of the easiest bosses, even though he is the last one.

Phase 1:
Absalom with run at you and when he gets close enough, he will swing at you. Simply avoid the attacks by evading to the side and run away from him. Use your skills here as well this way you can do damage to him without actual hitting him. Sometimes he will jump at you from across the arena, so dodge to the side and he will get caught in the ground. This is the time to lay some damage on him. When his health gets low, he will fall to one knee, so run over and press .

Phase 2:
Basically the same as before. Use the same technique to get his health down. He has a few more attacks that you can easily dodge out of the way. Sometimes he will hit the ground and swing his blade around and then at you. Just pay attention and evade the attacks. When his health again gets low enough, he will fall to one knee. Go over to him and press again.

Now he is a little bit mad, so his attacks are a bit more dangerous. When you see him raise his sword, watch for the black bomb things to come out, and avoid them. Sometimes he will send out some vines to hold you. When you get caught in them, rapidly press to get out before Absalom comes over. When he lunges out you, lay on your attacks. Don't forget to use your Reaper Form on him to do more damage.

Occasionally Gharn will fall down to one knee, so quickly go in and get some hits in. Be fast to back up though, because once he gets up, he will explode. Area 12 is the Boss Battle Karkinos.
This is the final fight before the Tears are released.
When you enter the room, walk up to the ball and press to roll it then to push it into the stump in the middle. This will awaken the Karkinos. Karkinos will usually rear back, scream and charge at you. Dodge the attack and when it hits the wall a ball falls down from the ceiling. Upon impact it will hatch, so kill the Earth Crag, then start hitting the Karkinos. When it awakens, watch out as it often jumps up and slams down releasing a shockwave. Jump over the shockwave and redo the previous attack. After about two or three attacks with the ball, the Karkinos will go into the middle of the arena and go under ground. Quickly go over to it and pull out some combos on it. It will soon rise and head back underground. It will sometimes come out, and spin like a wheel so dodge out of the way. When it comes out again, use the Deathgrip again then hit it with some combos.

Phase II:

Use the Deathgrip to get close to it and hit it with some combos. Avoid it when it takes the worm thing in hand and slams it to the ground. Strike hard at its feet until it collapse. Phase 1:
At first, Basileus fights you alone. His first attack is unpredicted, to be on guard. He will then continuously teleport all over, so you will need to be on guard. There is on attack he does that he will stand there for a few seconds, making it the perfect time to get some hits in before backing out of the way. When his health gets a bit low, a cutscene will appear and the second phase will start

Phase 2:
Basileus now calls upon Achidna, a giant spider, for help. Achidna really isn't to powerful, so you just need to back out of the way when she comes in for attacks. Using the deathgrip works fantastic to get up to her and lay on some hits. When some damage has been done, another small cutscene will happen and phase 3 will begin.

Phase 3:
This time, Basileus is on the ground again, but Achidna isn't far away. Use the same technique as phase one, but be on the defense because Achidna is near by. Occasionally, Basileus will go up in the air and Achidna will slam down. Evade this attack and keep going after Basileus. A few attacks here and there and one more cutscene will be activated.

Phase 4:
Again, Basileus will be riding Achidna. Achidna is a bit more powerful this time, but not hard to evade. Wait for her to get done attacking, and use the deathgrip to get up to her for a couple hits. When Achidna is down for good, Basileus will surround, ending the fight.

Boss Battle: Jamaerah the Scribe
Phase 1:
You can try to run in and hit Jamaerah, but he will rebel with a powerful lashing of a tentacle. Instead, look around and notice all the portals on the wall and ground. Keep your distance and open one portal on the ground and one portal across the room on the wall. When you see Jamaerah glow golden, he is about to unleash a powerful energy blast. As soon as you see him turning gold, stand next to a portal you have opened, and evade into the portal before the blast gets you. The blast will go through the portal and hit Jamaerah from the back.

Jamaerah will be stunned be his own attacks, giving you the chance to move in and lay some combos on him to rid his health. After dealing some damage to Jamaerah will go into the air, build up some power and come slamming down on the ground. Jump and avoid the shockwave that comes after the crash. Jamaerah will summon a few corrupted angels, so quickly take them out before you continue to work on Jamaerah. Use the same method as before.

Phase 2:
When Jamaerah is near death, he will take to the air one last time, opening a portal below him. Charge up the Voidwalker and shoot any of the upper portals then open the one below him. Make sure to change to the Deathgrip and jump in the portal below Jamaerah. When you come shooting out the other portal, quickly deathgrip the scribe and do some mid air combos. Repeat this until Jamaerah is defeated.

After you have defeated Thane in a battle in the Tri-Stone, a side quest opens. Thane will ask you to find and defeat 4 beast to become a great warrior. They aren't incredibly hard if you wait to do them until you are leveled up with good weapons.

Name Location Reward Suggested Level Attacks and technique
Bheithir The Nook Bheithir Talons 15-20
  • Slams down
  • Makes a lava trail
  • Swipes at you
The fight is much easier if you use your reaper form to get rid of a good chunck of its health. Avoid the lava trail as much as you can as it takes away a good portion of your health.
Gorewood The Weeping Crag - Go beyond the Stalkers Den to the Vale. Gorewood Maul 10-15
  • Sends rolling vines out
  • Swats at you
Avoid the vines because if you get caught in them, they will hold you in place while doing damage. Gorewood isn't really to hard, especially if you are at a higher level with good weapons.
The Deposed King Lair of the Deposed King Scepter of the Deposed King 20+ This guy is tough. He has several attacks and can only really be harmed the most when his staff is stock in the ground. When he raises it up, quickly dodge the attack so that you do not get frozen, then lay the attacks on him. Keep doing this over and over while using some skills.
Achidna The Pyschameron Achidna Fangs 15-20 See Court of Bones for details.

Boss battle: Soul Arbiter
Phase I:
You will find this boss on the eleventh floor of the maze. The Soul Arbiter is extremely fast, so watch his speed and evade when he comes at you. When you evade his attacks, quickly counter and hit him with some of your own combos. When the Arbiter starts to levitate in the air, quickly back away as he is about to drive his mace into the ground to deliver a massive attack.

Phase II:
When the Arbiters health has been cut down by a quarter, he will surround himself in a protective barrier. Your attacks have no effect on him now and he will not engage in combat either. This is the time you will need to focus on the enemies that surround you. Once the undead enemies have been defeated, the Arbiter will lower his shield and begin his attack once more. When his health reaches half, he will again, put up his barrier and more enemies appear. Just defeat them again to continue your fight with the Arbiter.

Phase III:
When the Arbiters health is left just at a quarter, he will summon an Undead General. The Arbiter is safe from your attacks, but you will not be so lucky. Keep your distance from the Arbiter and focus on the General. When the General falls, so will the Arbiters shield. The Arbiter is now near death, so it is time to finish him off. He will unleash powerful combo attacks, so evade and counter them with your own powerful combos. Soon you will be locked in swords with the Arbiter.

When the Arbiter is dead, you will claim the Crown of the Dead. Before leaving, go to the basement to open the chest. Exit the maze with the portal upstairs.

Death Reaches Level 30

During your first playthrough, you will receive XP from quests, side quests and defeating enemies. Once you get to level 22 though, you can no longer grow anymore levels. So even though you receive XP from turning in quest, it will do nothing for your leveling. You will need to complete your leveling up by starting a game on NG+. It should take you less then half a playthrough to reach level 30.

Select the Possessed weapon and upgrade it. You upgrade the weapon by sacrificing other weapons or armor. In the top right corner you will see a number as well as some skulls. When the bar next to the number gets filled, you will have leveled up the weapon and the trophy will pop.
