I have never had a portable gaming device in my life and I am really interested in getting one. I figure the PSP would be a good place to start. I see a few games that interest me and the price right now is pretty low. I thought about getting a Vita but the price is pretty high, but it does have some nice graphics and cool features (trophies!!). Do you guys think starting with a PSP as my first portable gaming device is a good idea? Or should I go all in with a Vita?

If you want trophies and graphics then get the Vita. If you want better games, lower prices on everything, and don't care about trophies, then get the PSP. I've had both and even though I like trophies and graphics a lot, I still go back to the PSP more because I prefer the games on it.
The popular opinion will be to break down and put the extra cash towards a Vita. If trophies, social networking and HD graphics aren't your thing, you could go with an early model PSP and emulate any game you want for free.
Emulation ROMs isn't something everyone agrees with, but for less than $50, you can have every PSP game ever made, as well as NES, SNES, Genesis, etc.
Given the opportunity, I'd personally go with the Vita myself.
I bought my Vita off eBay last September, and got it bundled with games & accessories for a pretty decent price. I think going that route is your best bet, because you can usually scoop up a better deal. Mine came virtually brand new with 5 games, a case and some screen protectors. Paid like 140 bucks at the time with shipping included, which was pretty good. The bigger screen, touch capability, dual analog sticks, everything is a million times better to me than the PSP. Cross-save/Cross-play: Added bonus.
I subscribe to GameFly, and of course since they've phased out PSP games it was the perfect time for me to upgrade. All in all, I would just bypass the PSP completely and go for the Vita. I think you'll be better off that way, and as you can see the general consensus of the gaming crowd is the same. Get the Vita!
Loved my PSP to death but my Vita is king now and for good reason, it's a fantastic handheld that trumps pretty much everything PSP did, if you are a Plus subscriber you rarely have to buy anything expensive game wise.
go either with the 3DS or a vita but don't waste your money with the PSP, the best games that were on that system have been ported or will be ported to the PS3 (KHBBSFM) and either of the newer systems have more going for them, its just smarter to go with the newer ones, unless like someone else has said of using the PSP for emulators but doing that is kinda dangerous since you have to downgrade the psp or worse to get it to work, 3DS has a emu card you can buy and most of the DS games are out there for download and work on the 3DS hardware, to my knowledge the vita doesn't emulate other then what is on the store for PSP software (which isn't every title). its up to you and how much money or investment you want to do.
when i had my psp, i absolutely regretted even thinking it was a good idea to have it
but not once have i regretted the vita, every time i bother to use it, i'm glad i have it
and besides, the vita can play psp games if you decide to get them from the ps store, so...it's like an ultra-win

If I randomly add you, it's because you're awesome...wanted an answer? There it is. =]
Cops don't protect against mugging, abuse, or grand theft. I thought you should know how great your "protectors" are.
