    The Official MLB Discussion Thread

New season is about 2 weeks away!

Who are your picks for the playoffs this year?
What players do you think will breakout in a big way?
What teams do you think will surprise us this year a la Baltimore and Oakland 2012?

Who will be the MVP, Cy Young and Rookie of the Year?

    Discuss it below!

Also, as a side note, what do you guys think about the World Baseball Classic?

As I'm writing this the last unbeaten team (dominican republic) is facing team USA in the WBC.

Through the top of the first, Dickey's knuckler looks much better than it did his last game... I kind of really want team usa to win...

Although this competition is still a joke as the top 3 SP's in baseball are all American and none of them are participating. lol

Anyway, I shall return later with my picks for all the awards and playoffs

Congrats to the Dominican Republic, champions of the 2013 WBC. Lead by Robinson Cano at the plate, and nearly the entire pitching staff... lol

Fernando Rodney, Pedro Strop, and Octavio Dotel combined for 19 scoreless innings, lol.

    AL East - TB Rays
    AL Central - Tigers
    AL West - Angels
    AL WC - Yankees
    AL WC - Blue Jays

    NL East - Nationals
    NL Central - Reds
    NL West - Dodgers
    NL WC - Cardinals
    NL WC - Braves

    AL MVP - Robinson Cano
AL Cy Young - King Felix Hernandez
AL Rookie of the Year - Dylan Bundy/Wil Myers

    NL MVP - Joey Votto
NL Cy Young - Stephen Strasburg
NL Rookie of the Year - Julio Teheran / Oscar Taveras

    Surprise Team - KC Royals

    Breakout stars:
Salvador Perez C (KC) - Literally a right-handed Joe Mauer who is perhaps as good as Yadier Molina defensively
Marco Estrada SP (MIL) - Enormous K/9 potential, while not walking many generally leads to big success
David Phelps SP (NYY) - Very quietly had a great season last year as a swing man for the Yankees, will continue to fill in for all the injured Yanks
Jedd Gyorko 2B/3B (SD) - Won the 2B job out of Spring, with Headley injury will play 3B for a bit, hit across all lvl's on minors for power
Matt Carpenter 2B (STL) - Could potentially bat lead-off for always productive Cards lineup.

Greatest news I've heard in a while - Tim McCarver announces this will be his last year doing play-by-play for FOX... If only he would take Joe Buck with him

So far the Cubbies and Astros are looking good but seeing how 2 teams were the laughing stock of the NL Central, I wonder if things will be a totally different this yr?

was in DC this past weekend and caught the Braves/Nationals Friday night. 4-0 Nats all game til late, 4-2 going into the 9th.. Braves tied in the 9th and Ramiro Pena sent us home in the 10th with a 2 run HR haha

I also got 3 balls during batting practice but gave 2 to the little kids sitting near me. Been to 300-400 baseball games in my life and those were the first balls I ever got

Wow that's just amazing to me. Hopefully the Cubs can follow suit in the next couple years. Hopefully they can keep it up, Pirates fans have earned it.

To be honest.....with the new testing of PED'ers, this season is just bad.

Hopefully these suspensions kind of put an end to it. The players are already talking about increasing sanctions for violating the league PED policies. The fact that the players are calling for this when 10 years ago, they didn't even want to be tested, shows that the game has vastly changed in the last 10 years.

Meanwhile, my 20 years of misery as a Pirates fan is finally coming to an end this year. Let's go Bucs!

When I think of sanctions...NK and Iran comes to mind. It wont do much but make players find a loophole in the system. Since baseball is suppose to be a team sport then everyone from the owner on down to players needs to get affected. Look at the Tour Le France....you get caught doping and you can kiss your name & titles good bye from the record book. Some goes for the olympic games, but they give the medal to the next in line.

A-Rod most definitely is giving the Yankees a black eye. Ryan Braun used to be considered a golden boy but he lied about it so his reputation will never be the same.
