Hotline Miami Coming to PS4

Hotline Miami released in June of 2013 on PS3 and Vita after initially being available to PC only. The top-down shooter with its hyper-violence and 80's-themed setting and graphics was a critical success, even making it to the PS+ program later that year

Over a year ago it was announced that Hotline Miami 2 was in production, but no release date has been hinted at yet. However, publisher Devolver is porting the original game to the PS4. The best part: the game is cross-buy. Much like Flower and Sound Shapes, if you own the PS3 or Vita version, you'll be able to download the game from the PS4's store free of charge. No release date has been given at this time.

Ubisoft Announces Assassin's Creed: Unity

Ubisoft has announced what will be their latest installment in the popular Assassin's Creed series, entitled Assassin's Creed: Unity, which will be coming to "next-gen" consoles. The below trailer, which is alpha-stage game footage, doesn't show too much, but it does show an approximate release window of Holiday 2014, so probably right in time for Christmas.

Sony Struggling to Keep Up With Demand for PS4

We've all seen the types of sales numbers that Sony has put up with the launch of the PS4. It's being sold at a record-breaking rate. Even now, during an interview at this week's GDC, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House stated that they're struggling to keep up with the demand, most notably in the U.S. and Europe. Retailers are having a tough time keeping the console on store shelves, which is good for business, but bad for anyone wanting to purchase the much-coveted console.

That being said, it appears as though those wanting to get their hands on the PS4 will have a bit of a tough time. PS4 consoles will be available in a limited quantity through the summer months. House said that it will take a while until Sony gets closer to a "full supply situation". Through the end of March, Sony has sold over 6 million PS4's wordwide.

New DLC Pack Coming for DC Universe Online, Amazon Fury Part I

Sony has announced the first of a three-part DLC pack for DC Universe Online, entitled Amazon Fury Part I. The new DLC will feature a new storyline involving Wonder Woman, Circe, and Amazon Queen Hippolyta. In addition to the new story, the DLC will also feature weapon mastery. Weapon Mastery will allow players to become proficient and master multiple weapon types, allowing them to seamlessly combine weapon usage during combat, allowing for a variety of new combos.

It seems like the DC Universe Online player base remains strong. While the PS4 has reinvigorated people's desire to play the extremly popular MMO, Jens Andersen, Senior Creative Director for DCUO states that the player base on other platforms remains stable. Amazon Fury Part I will release sometime in the Spring. It will be a free update for current subscribers, and will be available as a stand-alone purchase for free and premium players. No word yet on the cost.

Ubisoft to Release PlayStation-Exclusive Bundles and Content for Watch Dogs

Ubisoft Montreal had previously made it public knowledge that PlayStation owners would be getting a full hour's worth of additional content exclusive to the PS3 and PS4. They've now said that the additional hour will come in the form of four additional missions which offer a bit more background into DedSec, which is a cryptic group of Hackers in this fictional Chicago. Completing these missions will unlock a hacking boost, Superior Capacity, that provides for an additional in-game battery slot. Finally, the additional content will also include an outfit, The White Hat Hacker outfit, for the game's protagonist, Aiden Pearce.

What's more, Ubisoft Montreal has also stated that Europe will be getting exclusive bundles for the PS3 and PS4.

All in all, it seems like Watch Dogs will be a massive game. Not only will the main campaign take approximately 35-40 hours to complete, according to Ubisoft, but completing everything that Watch Dogs has to offer will take the average player about 100 hours.

Watch Dogs is set to release May 27, 2014 worldwide.

Forthcoming PS4 Update will Enhance SHARE Functionality, Enable HD Recording via HDMI

Sony has plans to release an update for the PS4 in the near future, which will add several improvements to the next-gen console. Streamers and YouTubers will definitely love the latest set of improvements that they have in store.

Sony claims that they've listened to their customer base since the release of the console, and they're going to be bringing some of the most-requested features to the PS4 with the system update that's forthcoming.

Some key enhancements planned are:
  • Add a rich video editor with a simple tool to personalize your video clips;
  • Export to and save the videos and screenshots you create by pressing the SHARE button to a USB drive;
  • Add an HDCP off option for capturing gameplay via HDMI.
While Sony had mentioned that there would be some sort of resolution for HDCP, it wasn't clear when and how. This made it so that PS4 footage could only be recorded using component video (unless you managed to bypass the HDCP, which is costly and not worth the trouble in my opinion). YouTubers wanting to capture their gameplay in all its HD glory will now be able to do so without any hassle.

Additionally, while PS4 gamers are able to easily share/stream their gameplay footage, it is not archived on Twitch like other streaming methods allow you to do. As part of a separate update in the near future, Sony promises that this will change. Additionally, broadcasts will be provided at a higher resolution of 720p.

Sony to Introduce Pre-Loading on PS4

As we move closer to the digital future of games, download times and release dates become a hot topic. Will we be able to play a game right when it releases if our download speeds are low? Sony says, "Yes." Or rather, Sucker Punch does.

Pre-loading was experimented with on PS3 with big name titles like Grand Theft Auto V. You would download and install the full game to your console prior to launch, but be unable to play it without the unlock key, which would appear once the official launch occurred at midnight. Sucker Punch's twitter account has stated that the feature would make its return (or debut in this case) on PS4 in North America some time in April. No word yet on Europe's chances of getting the same feature.

Borderlands 2 Vita Gameplay

Borderlands and its sequel released on previous gen's consoles to great success, merging a decent first person shooter with RPG elements. Not to mention its self proclaimed "Bazillion Guns" adding in a heavy looting system.

What the Vita has an extreme lack of (compared to its big brothers PS3 and PS4) is good first person shooters. Gearbox announced late last year that they would be porting the popular shooter to PlayStation's handheld "eventually." It's been a while since then, but finally some video has surfaced of actual gameplay on the handheld. Stationed at a booth at GDC, the video shows how well the vita can run the game. Not bad considering it is after all, a handheld. Borderlands 2 Vita has yet to receive a release date, but is expected some time in 2014.

Epic Games NOT Working on Next Installment of Unreal Tournament

Epic Games founder Tim Sweeny spoke at this weeks' Game Developer's Conference (GDC) and commented that the studio is in no way working on anything related to the Unreal universe. Those expecting another installment in the UT series can continue holding their breaths. It's already been nearly seven since the previous installment, so what's another few years, right?

Sweeny did speak on another IP that they're working on, Fortnite, but said that they don't really have anything to show at GDC.
We’re not [planning on] shipping an Unreal Tourname game ... we have a lot of nostalgia for the game but we’re actually not developing anything in the Unreal game universe at all at the moment. We’ve announced Fortnite … that’s a game we’ll be talking about later. We don’t have anything to show you here at GDC. We’re developing that project and there are several other projects that aren’t announced yet that are being developed with Unreal Engine 4.
