Gran Turismo: Sung Kang’s “Fugu Z” Coming to PS4

Yesterday, Ken Chan, Product Manager at SCEA stopped by the Playstation Blog to talk about Gran Turismo.

Following the announcement of Gran Turismo Sport at Paris Games week, the 13th annual Gran Turismo Awards quickly followed at the Marquee Nightclub inside Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, Nevada. Held during the SEMA Show, the 2015 GT Awards sought to find the best cars from five different categories (Best Truck or SUV, Hot Rod, Domestic Automobile, Asian Import, and European Import) by calling on experts from the automotive media and industry tastemakers.

Of the thousands of vehicles shown at SEMA Show this year, the automotive media experts narrowed the five category selections down to the following:

Best Domestic – 1970 Dodge Charger
Judging Expert – Autoblog
Best Euro – 1985 BMW 535i
Judging Expert – Hoonigan
Best Import – 1973 Datsun 240Z
Judging Expert – Super Street
Best Hot Rod – 1978 Ford Mustang Hard Top
Judging Expert – Bangshift
Best Truck – 1968 Chevrolet C10 Pro-Touring
Judging Expert – Truck Trend Network

In the end, Gran Turismo creator and series producer, Kazunori Yamauchi selected the 1973 Datsun “Fugu Z” 240Z owned by Sung Kang of the Fast and Furious film franchise, and built with Greddy Racing and partners.

Transplanted with a NA RB26DE, with a Pandem body kit by TRA Kyoto, the Fugu Z started as a good excuse for Sung Kang and his buddies to hang out and build something together — the result was a perfectly-executed SEMA build with a raw, yet classic feel to it, along with the right balance of modern upgrades and styling.

“Winning the Best in Show for the Gran Turismo Awards is surreal on many levels,” said Sung Kang, the actor known for his roles in the Fast and Furious film franchise and owner of the Datsun 240Z. “The Fugu Z started off as an idea between a few friends and myself to stoke our passion for cars. Thanks to Kenji Sumino, the Greddy team, and other partners, not only did that idea come to fruition, the response to our Z build at the SEMA show was overwhelming. And now with our Fugu Z winning the Best in Show for the Gran Turismo Awards, I’m honored that we’ll be able to share the car with the rest of the world as a playable vehicle in the game.”

“Greddy has won Best Asian Import for the Gran Turismo Awards three times prior to this year, but we always came short for the coveted ‘Best in Show,'” said Kenji Sumino, President of Greddy. “This year, with Sung Kang and his team’s vision for the build, thoughtful planning and tireless hours from the Greddy crew, and to our amazing partners who contributed to the build, we are honored not only to take home the fourth category win, but the Best in Show award!”

Stay tuned, Yamauchi has confirmed that Kang’s Fugu Z will come as a playable vehicle to the Gran Turismo franchise on PS4.

Nuclear Throne: You Did Not Reach the Nuclear Throne

Today, Rami Ismail from Vlambeer stopped by the Playstation Blog to talk about their upcoming game.

In Nuclear Throne, your goal is simple: reach the Nuclear Throne. It’s a brutal mix of fast-paced, top-down action, random generation, permadeath, and player choice — and honestly, you probably won’t stand a chance. More than anything, the result of your run will be seven simple words: “You did not reach the Nuclear Throne.”

To the two of us at Vlambeer and the four others who have been working on the game for the past 2.5 years, there’s something exciting about making a game that’s intentionally mean to you in every possible way, without becoming unfair. When we set out to make this game, we wanted to make a game that would be fun to play for us as its creators — something even we couldn’t fully predict.

Nuclear Throne did that, and then we made it harder and added more content. We continued adding little mean things to the game until eventually our gaming skills were pushed to the absolute limit. We didn’t stop pushing until we saw that dreaded “Did Not Reach” pop up because of mimics we forgot about while playing, or enemies that snuck up on us and ended our runs with a single well-placed hit.

In Nuclear Throne, you choose one of twelve mutants to reach that Nuclear Throne. Each of them has a passive and an active ability — sometimes simple, such as a temporary shield or higher ammo drops, and sometimes ridiculous, such as interdimensional airstrikes and the ability to fight on as a headless chicken after you die. When you get better at the game, you will get access to their own powerful Throne Butt or even more powerful Ultra abilities for your current run.

A mutant can carry two weapons at once, and there are approximately 125 weapons in Nuclear Throne. Some of them are the usual fare, pistols, machineguns, screwdrivers, laserguns — and some of them are completely over the top — things like gatling sluggers, super plasma guns, and the golden nuke launcher. Either way, power isn’t everything — the more powerful weapons take longer to reload and use more ammo, and if you run out of ammo, you’re going to have a pretty pathetic end to your run.

As you kill enemies and bosses in the wastelands, your mutant will gain radiation — or rads — that help your mutant achieve mutations. There are almost 30 mutations in the game — but you’ll only get to pick from a random selection of four at any time. Some of them are fun, some of them are practical, and some of them are very situational.

Scarier Face is a good one to come across, because it lowers the health on every enemy you come across. Impact Wrists — which increases the force your weaponry has on enemies, slinging them further away — works wonders when you’re playing with the mutant Melting, whose active ability allows you to blow up corpses from a distance. Or you might want to avoid Euphoria when you’re playing as Crystal, because her shield ability reflects bullets, and Euphoria slows down all projectiles in the game.

And that’s just the core of Nuclear Throne. As you struggle to figure out a way to beat the game’s areas and bosses, there are dozens of useful and less useful secrets to find — things called crowns, secret characters, areas, endings, cursed weapons, and all sorts of mysterious meta.

There are dozens of ways to enhance your run, or to make it harder. And if you feel like you’re ready to show off, we’ve got you covered, too. Play couch co-op with a friend, or participate in our daily challenge and a weekly challenge to show off your skills against everybody else.

Nuclear Throne will have an exclusive console launch on PlayStation platforms, and we’re looking forward to seeing how you do not reach the Throne.

New Mass Effect Andromeda Trailer Marks N7 Day

Today, David Hulegaard, Community Manager for BioWare stopped by the Playstation Blog to show a new trailer for Mass Effect Andromeda.

My love of the Mass Effect series brought me to BioWare in 2012. I’ve connected to it on an emotional level I never thought possible with video games. I still recall the pivotal moments throughout the trilogy with fondness, and think about all the time I spent with the Normandy crew, laughing, crying, and saving the universe.

I remember the tingles I felt after becoming the first human Spectre. I remember the excitement of pursuing a romantic endeavor with Liara…then Miranda… then Tali (my Shepard broke a few hearts along the way, apparently). I remember fighting the human Reaper in a state of genuine panic. I remember “M4 (Part II)” by Faunts playing as the credits rolled, and I caught my breath. I remember leaking a few tears after my final goodbye with Garrus: “Go out there and give them hell. You were born to do this.” There’s no Shepard without Vakarian, after all.

If you’re a Mass Effect fan, there’s a good chance more than one of my memories puts a smile on your face. You’ve got plenty more of your own, no doubt, and that’s why N7 Day was created: a day each year for us to come together and share the stories, fan art, cosplay, and moments that touched our hearts.

This N7 Day, we invite you to be a part of the celebration by using the hash tag #N7Day. Now that you know my passion — what does Mass Effect mean to you?

Bloodborne: Patch Details, New Screenshot from The Old Hunters

Today, Masaaki Yamagiwa, Producer at Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Studio stopped by the Playstation Blog with details about the new Bloodborne patch.

Hello, Bloodborne fans. The brand new nightmare, The Old Hunters expansion (which requires the full game), will be unleashed on November 24th. It brings with it a host of new content and improvements, but it’s not the only exciting news for Bloodborne. An upcoming patch will offer all players exciting new features in the original game, including The League, additional co-op NPC hunters, and more.

The League is a band of Hunters who have taken an oath and are bound by a single purpose. By aligning yourself to The League, led by a mysterious figure in a constable’s garb and bucket helmet, you can assist other players online in the game and compete in The League’s online rankings leaderboard.

In addition to The League, players will also be able to use The League cane and summon co-op NPCs within the game, perfect for tackling challenging areas and bosses.

To whet your appetite for the upcoming expansion, here is a sneak preview of one of the many brand new weapons available as part of The Old Hunters. Behold the Holy Moonlight Sword. Do you have what it takes to wield its mysterious power?

Don’t forget you can pre-order The Old Hunters here before November 24th to get a bonus PS4 Theme. Or if you haven’t played Bloodborne yet, get the game plus pre-order the DLC for just $49.99 right here.

As a special treat for all you hardcore Bloodborne players who have already earned your Platinum Trophy, or are close to unlocking it: in the very near future we will be sending out voucher codes for an exclusive PS4 theme to Platinum Trophy holders. There’s no other way to get your hands on this theme other than to master the game.

Stay tuned to PlayStation.Blog for additional information about the patch and The Old Hunters expansion DLC.

Transformers: Devastation DLC Comes to PlayStation Next Week

Today, Josh Engen, Community Manager stopped by the Playstation Blog to talk about the upcoming DLC for Transformers: Devastation.

When Transformers: Devastation was announced, long-time fans were understandably excited. The Generations-inspired visuals and PlatinumGames’ distinctive combat mechanics are a perfect pairing, like pizza and video games. And the fact that many of the original actors reprise their iconic roles after such a lengthy hiatus makes Transformers: Devastation even more significant. It’s the game that Transformers aficionados have been waiting for.

But the Transformers universe is massive, containing dozens of highly specialized robots. And after spending so much time perfecting Devastation’s five playable characters, the folks at PlatinumGames wanted to dig a little deeper into the franchise’s catalog. So, they put together a swanky DLC pack, containing a trio of character skins and three Decepticon-destroying weapons. Here’s the rundown:

Nemesis Prime and the Dark Star Saber

Anyone who’s familiar with Transformers lore could probably give you a little backstory about Optimus’ human-made clone, Nemesis Prime. He has all of Optimus Prime’s strength, but he’s controlled by the evil Decepticons, so he lacks Optimus’ principles. Though, he does have tinted-red windows and a slick, black paint job. So, he looks sweet.

And instead of Optimus’ trademark Energon-axe, Nemesis wields the Dark Star Saber, a glowing sword that quickly reduces enemies to scrap. Nobody makes a purple sword look better than Nemesis Prime.

Red Alert and the Photon Disruptor

Red Alert is the Autobot’s Security Director, but he’s a little on the paranoid side. In Transformers: Devastation, he makes up for that paranoia with the Photon Disruptor, a powerful weapon that gives him an advantage during ranged battles.

Goldfire and the Golden Hunter

Bumblebee is one of the friendliest-looking characters in the Autobot lineup, but his Goldfire skin gives him a slightly more threatening appearance. And when he whips out the Golden Hunter Weapon, a pair of highly polished hand cannons, Bumblebee becomes downright dangerous.

Even though the weapons have been personalized for Goldfire, Red Alert, and Nemesis Prime, they can be equipped by any of the playable characters. So, if you want to see Wheeljack take on Devastator with the Dark Star Saber, go right ahead.

The Transformers: Devastation DLC will hit PlayStation Store on November 10th.
